Ap Prose Practice Test: The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle Revisement
The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, a novel by Tobias Smollet, a portrayal of complex
emotions and social property are depicted through the dialogue between two characters. Tone
and dialogue can drastically change the way a story is perceived. Smollet exaggerates the
dialogue between the characters to engage the audience and draw them to the story.
Peregrine Pickle, a man fighting for the love of Godfrey Gauntlet’s sister, becomes
enraged with emotions being controlled by love. The dialogue between these men at first was
calm, curious, and understanding. This was Shmollet’s way of introducing the story to the
readers, and the readers to the story. “‘I demand it in the capacity of a brother, jealous of his own
honor, as well as of his sister’s reputation; and if your intentions are honorable, you will not
refuse it.’” (Smollet 6-9) Gauntlet, although curious about Pickle and his intentions with his
sister, Emilia The tone is pure concern only for the protection of Emilia. This shows the readers
that the brother is genuinely concerned and wants to know why Pickle is interested in Emilia.
As the story progresses, the mood and dialogue progresses as well. “‘You are mistaken,’
said Godfrey; ‘I dare do anything that becomes the character of a gentleman.’ — ‘Gentleman,
God wot!’” (Smollet 18-20) As pickle explains that he is a Gentleman and his intentions are
pure, Gauntlet becomes astonished with the title pickle has given himself. This title that Pickle
has given himself creates tension between the two men. This tension is brought on so fast that

those complex emotions are being brought to the readers as well. All of the action starts to
compile leaving the reader wanting more.
Towards the end, the passage's tone and the narrative pace becomes overwhelmed with
excitement. So as the reader continues, the excitement is brought to life through the story. “He
made no reply, but attacked his adversary with equal ferocity and address. The youth parried his
first and second thrust, but received the third in the outside of his sword —arm.” (Smollet 46-49)
The literary techniques within this section of the passage become magnetized with the book and
the way the author presents the words on the pages. Smollet then ends the passage with, “then
advising the owner to treat a gentleman in distress with more respect for the future, he slipped on
his boots with the sullen dignity of demeanour stalked to the inn.” (Smollet 63-63) In the end the
tone plateaus to a calm and relaxed state. This leaves the readers satisfied with the ending of the
story, which kept the reader engaged throughout the story.
Tone addiction plays an important role in writing and reading, it not only tells a story, but
it brings out those complex emotions. The tone and narrative pace keeps the reader engaged while
the dialogue keeps the reader’s imagination flowing. Smollet gave dialogue and context to help
the reader understand the situation. As Smollet changes the tone, he keeps the readers engaged in
an exciting and satisfying story.
