Taylor Swift might be the best artist of 2020. While everyone was home, struggling
more than ever, Taylor Swift came out with two fantastic albums. Before the

pandemic, she released what some people may call the best Taylor Swift song.
“Only The Young” was first heard in her Netflix documentary “Miss Americana”.
While watching Miss Americana I shed tears as Taylor Swift expressed how she felt
like she couldn’t be public about her political experience. I have too felt this way.
Her song is about the American political climate in the Trump era. Her song has
strong lyrics such as “Only one thing can save us. Only the young.” This is so
inspiring because young people around me often feel like because they can’t vote,
they shouldn’t have strong opinions. Because of this song, many young people have
spoken out and change is happening in America.

HIM
Sam Smith
The Grammy award winning artist created a masterpiece once again.
Sam Smith released HIM in 2017. The 2010’s was the era for the gay
community to be accepted. Gay marriage was legalized and more
people than ever were coming out. While many were relieved to come
out, many were nervous because of religion. Sam Smith’s HIM dives

into how God still loves you no matter who you love. He says “Don’t
you try and tell me that God doesn’t care for us”. Something about a
celebrity you look up to speaking on the subject, makes it seem less
terrifying. This is touching, as many of my friends have been afraid to
come out about their sexuality. A lot of these people don’t feel safe
coming out to their families but everyday more people are becoming
more accepting.

Where Is The
Love
Black Eyed Peas
Where Is the Love has been heard all over the world for the past 18 years.
Who knew one song could make such an impact. This song was written
when America was in need for help. 9/11 impacted everyone across the

United States and the country has never been the same since. The lyrics
address sensitive issues like terrorism, gang crime, war, and many more.
The purpose of this song is to remind people that when love is present,
problems can be resolved. The title refers to how there is not love in
America since there are so many people doing so many horrible things.
This song has been performed when the world needs it most. It was
played during the Black Lives Matter movement, during the Manchester
shooting, and in other tragedies. Many, including me, turn to this song
when they feel a little more love is needed.

Como La Flor
Selena
Being the Latina I am, I am constantly listening to Spanish music. When
I moved to Utah, I felt the need to only listen to music in English since
that was all my friends listened to. I felt embarrassed when my parents

would play Spanish music while we carpooled with friends. In 7th grade I
met one of my best friends who was born and raised in Utah. She is the
last person you imagine would listen to Spanish music. When we were at
my house, she heard my parents listening to Como La Flor by Selena and
she suddenly started singing along. Selena brought Spanish music to
America and was one of the most popular artists of her time. She has had
multiple tv shows and movies made about her, and has paved the way for
many Latino artists.

We Are the
World
U.S.A. For Africa
We Are The World was a benefit single for victims of famine in
Africa. The song itself raised $60 million, and was distributed to many

countries in Africa. This song brought together many artists including
Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Lionel Richie. This song brings
tears to my eyes no matter how many times I listen. I think the
concept of this song is genius and the fact that all these artists came
together brings me so much joy. To put it simply, We Are The World
unites everyone. This song was re-recorded in 2010 to help Haiti and
has also been recorded in Spanish.

I Will Survive
Gloria Gaynor
When I think female-empowerment I think I Will
Survive. Many see it as a go-to song after they go through

a difficult situation and the lyrics “ I can go on. I will be
strong” do just that. This song is bound to bring a smile to
your face and make you feel like you’re on top of the
world. The song has become a hit in the gay community
and has helped people more than many would think.
When I need a pick me up, this is the first song I turn to.
