Meaning of NGO

Non-governmental organizations, commonly referred to as NGOs are usually non-profit

organization and sometimes international organizations independent of governments and
international governmental organizations that are active in humanitarian, educational, health
care, public policy, social, human rights, environmental, and other areas to effect changes
according to their objectives. They are thus a subgroup of all organizations founded by citizens,
which include clubs and other organozation that provide services, benefits, and premises only to
members. Sometimes the term is used as a synonym of "civil society organization to refer to any
association founded by citizens but this is not how the term is normally used in the media
or everyday language, as recorded by major dictionaries. It first says an NGO is any non-profit,
voluntary citizens' group which is organized on a local, national or international level, but then
goes on to restrict the meaning in the sense used by most English speakers and the media:  Task-
oriented and driven by people with a common interest, NGOs perform a variety of service and
humanitarian functions, bring citizen concerns to Governments, advocate and monitor policies
and encourage political participation through provision of information

Features of NGOs

NGOs have come in to existence with a particular purpose, the features of NGOs can be

understood as follows:

1. Voluntary associations:

NGOs are created by people as a voluntary association having a common interest.

2. Autonomous:

NGOs are regulated by their own policies and procedures and they have an autonomous

body without any government interference.

3. Service Motive:
NGOs are only concerned with social welfare aspects such as education of children,

protection of animals, wildlife, environment, improving the status of women etc. as they are non-

profit organization.

4. Own funds:

NGOs create and raise their own funds. They often gathers contribution from the public.
Some NGOs are also financed by private business organizations and they may also be financed
by International Authorities.

Types of NGOs

 Charitable Orientation: It often involves relief activities during the natural

calamities or man-made disasters with little participation by the "beneficiaries". It
includes NGOs with activities dedicated towards the needs of the poor
-distribution of food, clothing or medicine; provision of housing, transport,
schools etc. Such NGOs are called charitable orientation.

 Service Orientation: Includes NGOs with activities in which people are

expected to participate and implement or take the advantage of the services such
as the provision of health, family planning or education services which are
designed bythe NGO itself.

 Participatory Orientation: Co-operatives generally have a participatory

orientation. It is known as self-help projects where local people are participating
particularly in the implementation of a project by helping through cash, tools,
land, materials, labour etc. In the classical community development project,
participation begins with the need identification and continues to the planning and
implementation stages.

 Empowering Orientation: It is where the objective is to aid poor people

develop a deep understanding of the social, political and economic factors
affecting their lives, and to strengthen their knowledge regarding their own
potential to control their own lives. Sometimes, these groups develop suddenly
due to a problem or an issue, at other times outside workers. NGOs play a
supporting role in their development. In any case, there is more involvement of
the people with NGOs acting as supporters.
Role of NGOs

NGOs are playing crucial role in the present scenario. They are trying to fill the gaps

created by the government. Their contribution is significant particularly in the following fields.

 Children’s Education

 Development of Youth

 Protection of animals

 Betterment of disabled

 Development and operation of infrastructure

 Technical assistance and training

 Facilitating communication

 Providing service

 Emancipation of women

 Helping in distress

‘The Circle’ translating Vedic concept of zero, depicts the unending, uninterrupted, invisible
flow of energy which sustains Life.

‘The Red’ depicts blood, the medium of energy-flow, while ‘The Green’
symbolizes purity of environment – both signifying sustenance of Life on
the planet.

‘The Five Drops’ represent five elements of Life – Earth, Air, Fire, Water,
Space as the ‘S’ curve signifies Safety, Security, Sanctity and Service.

‘The Form of White Drop’ portrays the flame (‘Jyot’) which represents knowledge and
enlightenment.

‘The Leaf inside the Circle’ depicts Environment. It also depicts the thin dividing line between
human blood and plasma of trees which form the eternal relationship between Life and
Sustenance.

The ‘Red Waves’ and the ‘White Waves’ depict the character and express the buoyancy and
strength of Life.
Life in Different Interventions

1. Blood:

On 6th December 1981it was started as a first blood bank of Saurashtra Region. Also
it was the first blood bank in India to be accredited by American Association of Blood Banks
(AABB) back in 1985. Received accreditation by National Accreditation Board for Hospital
& Healthcare Centre Providers (NABH). LBC is certified blood bank by International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2008. It is committed to contribute towards safe
blood transfusion and appropriate use of blood and blood components to the needy patients
by most advanced technologies and processes.

2. Greenfield:
Greenfield Centre encourages people to plant trees with provision of pollution free
healthy and greener planet to live in. The LGC has about 63 indigenous varieties of trees and
plants which are raised and nurtured to about 6-8 feet height till they are self-sustaining.
These plants are then distributed for re-plantation with proven record of high survival rate
after re-plantation. Trees provide clean air by absorbing carbon dioxide and other pollutant
gases. In return, trees produce oxygen which is released into the atmosphere. It also controls
temperature and prevent soil erosion and water pollution that helps in maintaining and
balancing ecosystem. That means areas with more trees are more likely to maintain cool and
pleasant surroundings for the healthy living. We ensure availability of healthy trees to
corporate, hospitals, institutions, municipalities and communities and their by enriching lives
through tree plantation.
