Lesson - 4 Percent: Expectation

This document provides examples and explanations for converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages. It begins by explaining how to write a fraction as a percent by multiplying the fraction by 100 and simplifying. Several examples are provided. It then explains how to express a percentage as a fraction by writing the percentage over 100. More examples of converting decimals to percentages by moving the decimal point two places to the right and percentages to decimals by moving it two places to the left are given. Practice problems have students converting between the different forms.

Lesson – 4 Percent

Expectation:
 Express decimal numbers or a fraction in percent
 Come up with a strategy on how to convert decimal to fraction.

Question 1: How do you write a fraction in a percent?

To write a fraction as percent, multiply the fraction by 100, then
simplify, and then affix percent symbol (%)

Example 1:
2 2 200
1. 10 ( x 100) = = 20 or 20%
10 10
1 1 100
2. 5 ( x 100) =
5 5
= 20%

Or 2 ÷ 10 = 0.2 = 20 %
2 2 200
3. 3 ( x 100) =
3 3
= 66.67%

Question 2: How do you express a percentage as fraction. Write the

numbers as a fraction with 100 as its denominator. Then express it in
simplest form.
Example 2:
Express 5% and 33% as a fraction
Solution:
5 1
1. 5% = 100 = 20 simplified

33
2. 33% = 100 already simplified

Example 3:
To change decimals to percent, just move the decimal point two places to
the right, then affix the percent symbol.

Example:
1. 0.18 = 18%
2. 2.5 = 250%
3. 0.5 = 50%
4. 1.2 = 120%
5. 0.675 = 67.5 %

Example 4:
To change percent to decimals, move the decimal point two places to the
left, then drop the (%) percent symbol.

Example:
1. 2.5% = 0.25
2. 125% = 1.25
3. 6% = 0.06
