La La Land 10

I'm sorry, we're looking for a story, not a song. MIA: (Sings) I have dreamed that your arms are lovely, I have dreamed what a joy you'll be I have dreamed every word you'll whisper, when you're close, close to me How you look in the glow of evening, I have dreamed and enjoyed the view But I don't want to dream about you anymore, I want to dream of lying with you And in my heart, I can hear you whisper, "You are gonna be a star" You really know how to cheer a girl up, when you say that I've got what it takes Bird on a wing, words are taking me there,

NARRATOR: It all started in winter, when two different individuals got stuck in Los Angeles
traffic. Mia Dolan, a barista and an aspirant actress had her moment of road commotion with
Sebastian Wilder, a person who struggles on playing the piano. Mia, came home at night having
transparent exhaustion due to her failure in an audition not knowing that her roommates will
persistently take her to a fancy party.
[Setting: Bedroom with a dresser]
(Mia just got out of the bathroom and checking herself on the mirror with Girl 2)

ALEXIS: (Walks in) Mia, how did your audition go?

MIA: Uhm... (just shrugs) (walks away and sat down on the bed)
TRACY: (Walks in) Two minutes, people! (said while fixing themselves in front of a mirror)
CAITLIN: Mia, you're coming, right?
MIA: I can't! I'm working! (Said while drying her hair with a towel)
TRACY: What?
CAITLIN: (Whispers) Did she just say working? (Alexis and Tracy just shrugs)

(Tracy sat down beside her)

MIA: (Looks at Tracy) What?
TRACY: I'm sorry it didn't go well today. But right now? You'll be coming! It'll be fun.
MIA: It's not gonna be fun. It's gonna be an event of social climbers
(Tracy checks something on the drawer and got a dress on her hand)
TRACY: (Shows the dress) This looks good on you. How long have you had this?
ALEXIS: (Runs to Tracy and gets the dress) We'll make fun of it together!
TRACY: (Sits on the bed) This party's gonna be like, humanity at its finest
[Girls sings Someone in the Crowd]
TRACY: You got the invitation
ALEXIS: You got the right address
TRACY: You need some medication?
CAITLIN: (Enters) The answer's always yes
TRACY: A little chance encounter could be the one you've waited for
ALL (except Mia): Just squeeze a bit more
ALEXIS: Tonight we're on a mission, tonight's the casting call
CAITLIN: If this is the real audition, oh, God, help us all
TRACY: You make the right impression, then everybody knows your name
ALL (except Tracy): We're in the fast lane
ALEXIS: Someone in the crowd could be the one you need to know, the one to finally lift you off
the ground
TRACY: Someone in the crowd could take you where you wanna go, if you're the someone
ready to be found
ALEXIS (adlib): You're the someone ready to be found
ALL (except Mia): Do what you need to do, till they discover you, and make you more than who
you're seeing now. So with the stars aligned
MIA: I think I'll stay behind
ALL (except Mia): You've got to go and find
CAITLIN (Whispers) That someone in the crowd

(Exit) [Setting: Outside of the house, night]

(Mia enters wearing 'that' dress)
ALL (except Mia): (Exclaims) That someone in the crowd
(Instrumental, dances)

[END OF SCENE 1]

SCENE 2

NARRATOR: That night didn't end as simply as it would be. Upon walking home forcefully, Mia,
met Sebastian in a restaurant that she passed by through the beautiful sound of his jazz
masterpiece that makes her come in, to hear more of it.
Sebastian, who is a struggling jazz pianist, got fired because of his disobedience in his gig at a
restaurant where Mia saw him and also witnessed the whole situation.
Then months after, spring came. And again, Mia heard how Sebastian play a song along with a
band. Unexpectedly, they got the chance to know each other. More when the two walked to
their cars, wasting the lovely night despite having visible chemistry and felicity together.

[Setting: On the road showing a beautiful sky]

MIA: (Walking) It's pretty strange that we keep on running into each other.
SEBASTIAN: (Walking) This is strange...maybe it means something.
MIA: I doubt it.
SEBASTIAN: Yeah, I don't think so.
MIA: (Clicking her car keys, looking for her car)
SEBASTIAN: (Looks at her) You got to put that thing to your chin.
MIA: This? (Puts her car keys on her chin)
SEBASTIAN: It can find your car faster. Just a suggestion.
MIA: You're really, uhm...(thinks) what is the word that I'm looking for?
SEBASTIAN: Knight in shining armor.
MIA: Weirdo. That was the word, okay.
SEBASTIAN: Not much to look at, huh
MIA: I've seen better
(They both stopped walking and stares at the view--the sky)
(Sebastian moves to the postlight, then sings A Lovely Night)
SEBASTIAN: The sun is nearly gone, the lights are turning on, a silver shine that stretches to the
sea (moves closer to Mia) we've stumbled on a view, that's tailor-made for two, what a shame
those two are you and me
(Mia starts to find her car again while Sebastian still follows her)
SEBASTIAN: (Sings) Some other girl and guy, would love this swirling sky, but there's only you
and I, and we've got no shot (Stops walking) this could never be, you're not the type for me
MIA: Really?
SEBASTIAN: (Sings) And there's not a spark in sight, what a waste of a lovely night
MIA: (Sings) You say there's nothing here, well let's make something clear, I think I'll be the one
to make that call
SEBASTIAN: But you'll call?
MIA: (Sings) And though you looked so cute, in your polyester suit
SEBASTIAN: It's wool
MIA: (Sings) You're right, I'd never fall for you at all (sits at a bench) and maybe this appeals, to
someone not in heels, or to any girl who feels, there's some chance for romance, but, I'm
frankly feeling nothing (brings out her shoes from her bag)
SEBASTIAN: Is that so?
MIA: (Sings) Or it could be less than nothing
SEBASTIAN: (Sings) Good to know, o you agree?
MIA: (Sings) That's right
BOTH: (Sings) What a waste of a lovely night
(Instrumental, starts doing their dance)

[END OF SCENE 2]

SCENE 3

NARRATOR: Days passed and the time that they are spending together are increasing. Sebastian
went to the coffee shop where Mia is working a barista. The both od them are exploring each
other's passion and dreams, both in acting and in jazz, which makes them be closer to each
other.
Sebastian invited Mia to screening of a movie, after knowing everything about her passion on
acting. After parting ways temporarily, Sebastian stared to walk, sing, and think deeply.

[Setting: A bridge]
(Sings City of Stars)
SEBASTIAN: City of stars, are you shining just for me? City of stars, there's so much that I can't
see (dances with an old woman) Who know, is this the start of something wonderful and new?
Or one more dream that I cannot make true?
(Old man tapped his shoulders, Sebastian walks away, the old couple stars to dance)

NARRATOR: Mia, who accepted Sebastian's invitation, forgets that she also has a commitment
with her boyfriend, Greg, both on the same day. Unfortunately, she got bored on her date
that's why she unhesitatingly goes to the theater with Sebastian. The both ended their night,
romantically, visiting an observatory.
Their passion are slowly turning into reality. Mia, despite of her failed auditions, was convinced
by Sebastian to write a play. While Sebastian, started to perform regularly at a club. This is
where he met Keith, inviting him to join in their band. The two started to live in together, turns
out having greater plans and bigger dreams.
[Change of Setting: House with a piano]
(Sings City of Stars)
SEBASTIAN: City of stars, are you shining just for me? City of stars, there's so much that I can't
see, who knows, I felt it from the first embrace I shared with you
MIA: (Sings while looking at him) That now our dreams may finally come true (walks closer) City
of stars, just one thing everybody wants, there in the bars, and through the smokescreen of the
crowded restaurants, it's love, yes, all we're looking for is love from someone else (sits beside
him)
SEBASTIAN: A rush
MIA: A glance
SEBASTIAN: A touch
MIA: A dance
BOTH: A look in somebody's eyes, to light up the skies, to open the world and send it reeling,
voice that says, I'll be here and you'll be alright, I don't care if I know, just where I will go, 'cause
all that I need's this crazy feeling, a rat-tat-tat on my heart
SEBASTIAN: Think I want it to stay

[END OF SCENE 3]

SCENE 4

Narrator: The band's first tour happened, having Sebastian as their keyboardist through Keith's steady
income offer, despite of being dismayed at the band's style of music. Mia realized that his band is a
success but it is not the genre of music that he wants. Sebastian set a dinner for the both of them but
ended up having an argument and that, ended with a war of silence, without being resolved.

After that, they continued living their dreams. Mia, had her play along Sebastian's photoshoot that's why
he missed her play, where Mia got disappointed because only few people came, and because of other's
judgement in her acting.

And again, they argued because of his absence on Mia's play. Suddenly, Mia ended her relationship with
him and goes back to her home. But Sebastian got a call from a casting director who attended her play.

[Setting: In front of Mia's house]

MIA: Why did you come here?
SEBASTIAN: Because I have a good news.
MIA: What?
SEBASTIAN: The casting director, she was at your play. She loved it so much that she wants you
to come tomorrow and audition for this movie that she's got.
MIA: (Shakes her head) I'm not gonna do that. No, that will kill me.
Sebastian: Why?
MIA: Because...because I've been in a million of auditions and the same thing happens
everytime! Or because...maybe I'm not good enough.
SEBASTIAN: Yes you are.
MIA: No, maybe I'm not. I can find something else that I want to do. It's been six years since I
left and do that. I don't want to do it anymore.
SEBASTIAN: Why?
MIA: 'Cause it hurts a bit too much.
SEBASTIAN: You have an audition tomorrow at five thirty. I'll be at the front at the front at 8am.

NARRATOR: Her audition started and it only requires a story for her to tell but she sings a story
in response.

[Setting Change: Audition room]

(Sings Audition (The Fools Who Dream))
MIA: My aunt used to live in Paris, I remember, she used to come home and tell us these stories
about being abroad, and I remember she told us that she jumped into the river once, barefoot
MIA: (Sings) She smiled, leapt, without looking, and tumbled into the Seine, the water was
freezing, she spent a month sneezing, but said she would do it again
Here's to the ones who dream, foolish as they may seem, here's to the hearts that ache, here's
to the mess we make
She captured a feeling, sky with no ceiling, the sunset inside a frame, she lived in her liquor, and
died with a flicker, I'll always remember the flame
Here's to the ones who dream, foolish as they may seem, here's to the hearts that ache, here's
to the mess we make
She told me, "A bit of madness is key to give us new colors to see, who knows where it will lead
us? And that's why they need us"
So bring on the rebels, the ripples from pebbles, the painters, and poets, and plays
And here's to the fools who dream, crazy as they may seem, here's to the hearts that break,
here's to the mess we make
I trace it all back to then, her, and the snow, and the Seine, smiling through it, she said she'd do
it again

[END OF SCENE 4]

SCENE 5

NARRATOR: Even having uncertainties of their future, they profess that they will still love each
other. Not until five years later, Mia became married with another man named David, having a
daughter on their own. A night came, when they went to a jazz club. Mia noticed the logo of
the club that makes her realize that Sebastian finally opened a club.

[Setting: A bar]
They couple came in. Sebastian starts to notice Mia in the crowd. He begins to play their love
theme in the piano.
(Sebastian looks at Mia in the crowd)
SEBASTIAN: Welcome to Seb’s
[Change of Setting: Depending on the what ifs]
(The piano’s still playing as a background music of the fast pace of every sequence)
NARRATOR: They both imagined the sequence that happened in the past, all of the what ifs.
What if, Sebastian listened to Mia's compliments during their first meeting and spent the night
together? What if, Sebastian didn't let his friend to force him to become a part of their band
and not turn away from jazz and give up his real dream? What if, Mia's play becomes successful
and was witnessed by Sebastian? What if, they continued their relationship along pursuing their
dreams and passion together? What if, they had a family together? Living under the same roof
happily, and both achieved their goals. What if, Sebastian is the one who's with Mia at the club?
(A round of applause) (Mia is seen seated beside David)
DAVID: You want to stay to another?

NARRATOR: But all of the what ifs, brings them back into reality. The reality where Mia just
smiled at Sebastian, and walks away with her husband.
