*Hands-On Journal Template for Book Studies

Instructions:
Students cut out and paste labels into a notebook or small binder
filled with lined paper.
If students want to get really creative, they can cut and paste
labels on a poster board.
Labels may be laminated, but this is optional.
Pages to paste labels for:
1. My Story Journal Title Page-- Student's Name
2. Book Title and Author
3. Descriptive Picture- portraying an art scene characterizing the story
4.Main Character
-Sentences describing the main character are written below the label
5. Small Square Flip Book- stapled and taped into journal
(picture for the main character, adjectives describing the main character, verbs
that the main character might do ie: eat or run, and the student's feelings about
the main character in the book)
Descriptive sentences , paragraphs, or pages about the following under the
pasted labels for each category
6.Setting
7.Plot
8. Theme
9.Theme Symbol
10.Cirlce Adjectives- cut out and paste
(Adjectives describing the theme of the story)
11. Thoughts about the story
12.Favorite parts in the story

Descriptive Picture
This picture describes the content of my book.
Main Character
Write a few sentences about the main character
in the story.
This is a small picture that illustrates the main character.
Write down three adjectives that describe the main character.
Compile a list of verbs, or action words, that the main character
does.
Write a sentence describing your feelings about the main
character in the story.
Setting of the Story
Describe the setting of the story. Use complete sentences.
Plot of the Story
Describe the plot of the story. Remember, the plot pertains to
what is happening in the story. Keep conflict and characters in mind.
Theme of the Story
Describe the theme of the story. Use complete sentences.
My theme symbol
Draw a symbol or object that relates to the theme of the story.
In complete sentences, explain why your symbol or object
illustrates the theme in the story.
On each circle, write an adjective that describes the theme of the story.

Students can flip through their stories to find nouns.
