Middle School Credo
Please follow these guiding principles as I prepare to leave you for six
months
● Stop what you are doing right now and recall what attracted you to
the Middle School level. Write those notions down and place them
somewhere visible and accessible to you. Feel free to add as your
wisdom grows.
● Refresh your understanding of the biological, emotional and social
developmental stages of adolescents for both genders then use that
knowledge to remind parents and staff that their child/student actions
are perfectly normal.
● Discipline with dignity. Keep in mind that this level needs fair and
reasonable boundaries as this provides predictability and makes
them feel safe.
● Review the multitude of learning modalities and expect our staff to
apply them in their classroom.
● Set an expectation that every single student is contributing to their
community as this helps them grow, develop self-worth, meaning,
purpose, importance, etc. Throughout the year, ask students “how are
you contributing to our community?” Then assist them in locating
opportunities such as student committees, clubs, babysitting, sports,
home garden, etc.
● Give permission to our staff to be vulnerable so that they can try new
instructional methodologies without judgment.
● Immersive learning creates strong pathways in the brain. Provide
financial and logistical support for our staff that engages in these
practices.
● Maintain an appreciation for where our families are at and then work
with them to get where they want to be.
● Visit the homes of your most challenging students to build trust and to
get an understanding of their life outside of our school walls in order
to be more compassionate.
● Ensure a sense of belonging for everyone - including students,
parents & staff. Make certain all of our staff members and students
feel important and valued.
● Promote academic rigor: students will appreciate and rise to higher
standards.
● Model all of your beliefs all day every day… but remember that it’s
alright to change your views and become enlightened.
● Enforce the rules for staff and for students… the entire school
community will benefit and be grateful.
● Seek to expand your knowledge on everything
● Listen, listen, listen before you speak.
