Introduction To Modern Power Electronics: Dr. U. T. Shami

This document provides an introduction and overview of the textbook "Introduction to Modern Power Electronics" by Andrzej M. Trzynadlowski. It discusses the contents of Chapter 1 which covers the basics of power electronics including definitions of power electronics and generic power converters. Chapter 1 also discusses waveform components such as total harmonic distortion and distortion factor. It explains different methods of phase control including resistive phase control as well as phase control using electronics for both DC and AC applications. Pulse width modulation is also introduced. The document provides figures and equations to support the explanations of these fundamental power electronics concepts.

Total harmonic distortion or THD
This is the measure of closeness in shape between a
waveform and its fundamental component.

1
THD  (  V on2 ) 1 / 2
V o1 n  2,3,...

THD is the summation of all harmonic components of

the voltage or current waveform compared against the
fundamental component of the voltage or current
wave:
Distortion Factor

 THD gives the total harmonic content, but it

does not indicate the level of each harmonic
component.

 If a filter is used at the output of inverters, the

higher order harmonics are attenuated more
effectively.
Distortion Factor
 The distortion factor indicates the amount of
harmonic distortion that remains in a
particular waveform after the harmonics being
subjected to a second-order attenuation
(divided by n2).

 Therefore, DF is a measure of effectiveness in

reducing unwanted harmonics without having
to specify the values of the load filter.

1.4 Phase Control
A Resistive Phase Controller will control the output voltage
magnitude either ac or dc without using a transformer.
A Resistive Phase Controller also called Resistive controller,
changes the output value according the value of the resistor.
The magnitude control ration M is defined as

The resistive control method should not be used in high-power

applications.
