Purposive Comunication
COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS

Check your understanding of the input by answering the following questions:

1. How do you differentiate the types of communication in relation to communication mode?

- The types of communication according to its mode differ by the way it is being expressed.

2. How can visual communication enhance the message conveyed by a speaker? Cite a particular
situation when it is best to employ visual communication.
- Through visual communication, the message that is conveyed by the speaker will be more
likely to understand by the receiver, just like sending a message thru chat by adding some
emoticons in the message it will give idea to the receiver of how is the message expressed by
the speaker.

3. What are the types of communication in relation to context? How do they differ from one another?
- communication contexts include intrapersonal, interpersonal, extended, organizational, and
intercultural communication. Each context has its advantages and disadvantages, and its
appropriate and inappropriate uses.

4. How can you listen to speakers' opinions through electronic media without being easily swayed into
accepting their opinions?
- Learn to accept everyone’s opinion and not getting swayed. And also you can check for some
background information about the speaker, so that you will know if the opinion of the speaker is
reliable or does it answer your concern about the certain topic.

5. Of the four approaches employed in formal organization structure, which do you think is the best?
Cite situations which will call for the use of each approach. Give one advantage and
disadvantage of each.
- Of all the for approaches I think the best approach is the downward communication because it
is very formal the it is delivered from the high ranked person of the company down to the staffs.
The upward communication is delivered from the staffs to the high ranked person so the
advantage here is that the person in the highest position will know every concerns from
everyone but the disadvantage here is that when it is not delivered well, there will be chances of
misunderstanding. As well as the other approach of communication, the advantage is that
everyone will know there concerns but the disadvantage is when it is misunderstood.

6. Would you know any strategy or method by which you can reduce the complexity of understanding
another culture? Do you think it will work with your current set of foreign classmates/friends?
-Keep an eye on things. Simply look at the types of structures they often use in their
interactions. The best way to learn about a new area is to observe it. Since the desire to observe
is inherent in all of us, the subconscious mind is very effective at it. Don’t be intimidated by
intercultural context, which you can perceive as complex. There isn’t a dynamic culture to which
man can’t adapt.
7. How do you differentiate formal communication from informal communication in relation to purpose
and style? Provide situations to illustrate the differences.
-Formal communication takes the form of writing, while informal communication takes the form
of speaking. Formal communication takes time versus informal communication, which is fast
and simple. Informal communication is not as trustworthy as formal communication. Just like
when explaining something it is way better if it is written formally first so that we can’t anything
that we don’t want to say unlike the informal way of speaking, we might say something that is
not necessary and can probably cause misunderstanding.

TASK 1.2.1

Organizational Culture

Name:Charlote Jennifer N. Fetalino Score:__________

Date:March 24, 2021 Section:BS ENTREP 1B

I. Interview a certain head of an organization/company and ask him/ her the following questions:

1. What is the culture of your organization?

- Our fostered a culture of nonprofit-minded workers. Having a common purpose unites our
team and ensures that everyone is working for the same goal.

2. Do you think cultures can be created? Modified? Changed?

- Cultures change and develop when there are enough influential people to inspire people to think and
act in certain ways. For example, in the past, societies would shift mostly when a new king or emperor
came to power and used his or her power to encourage people to change their attitudes. Cultures
change for the better and for the worse as a result of people changing their attitudes. So cultures can be
created, modified, and changed by anyone with enough clout / influence to persuade a large enough
number of people to change their ways of thinking and feeling.

II. In the school where you are currently enrolled, what is the prevailing organizational culture? What
are some of the practices/ rituals that you observe?
- Well as of now I can’t say more about the culture of the school where I am currently enrolled
since it was my first year of college but pandemic happen and I didn’t get a chance to explore
more about the culture of BISU. But sometimes when I go to the university I can say that the
people in the campus starting from the security guard as we enter the campus have good
practices in culture.
