"Media Freedom in the Philippimes"
by Ms. Camille Elemia
Senior Multimedia Reporter at Rappler
The current situation was talked about in the live stream EPIKO: Radio in the Eye of truth- tellers. From
ABS-CBN closure , the Rappler Verdict a Blow to Media Freedom Manila Court Convicts Duterte Critic
Maria Ressa for Libel and the press freedom in the Philippines further suffered a hit during the
coronavirus pandemic, with more restrictive measures against media entities through intimidation,
surveillance, and other tactics, a report said.
As Maria Ressa and Rappler face charges for their journalism and broadcasting network ABS-CBN
remains off-air, the recently enacted Anti-Terror law sends yet another stark warning that press freedom
and democracy in the Philippines remain under threat.
Ressa also cited the widely condemned fate of ABS-CBN, the Philippines’ largest broadcaster that was
ordered by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to shut down in May when its franchise
licence expired. She said, “what happened to ABS-CBN can happen to all of us. Journalists, we have to
hold power to account. We need to continue to demand accountability.”
Upholding freedom of expression. "No law shall be passed abridging tge freedom of speech, of
expression or of the press, or the right people peacebly to assemble and petition the government for
redness of grievances."
Control and Intimidiation. Stated and coordinated: ICFJ dives into online attacks Vs. Maria Ressa.
According to RSF (2020), When sworn in as president in June 2016, Rodrigo Duterte issued this cryptic
but grim warning: “Just because you're a journalist, you are not exempted from assassination, if you're a
son of a bitch. Freedom of expression cannot help you if you have done something wrong." Three
Philippine journalists were killed in 2019, probably by thugs working for local politicians, who can have
reporters silenced with complete impunity. Meanwhile, after a ten-year wait, leading members of the
Ampatuan political clan were finally convicted in December 2019 of carrying out the biggest ever
massacre of journalists – on the island of Mindanao in 2009.
According to Camille Elemia, "This is not about us, its about the people. Fight for your rights. No one else
will do it for you."
