Making An Electroscope

The document provides instructions for creating a 4-7 minute video demonstrating how to build and test an electroscope. Students are asked to make their own electroscope using materials like a glass jar, aluminum foil, copper wire, plastic lid, and straw. They then must explain how an electroscope works and test it by rubbing a material and moving it near the copper wire to see the aluminum foil pieces separate, indicating a charge. The video should show the student assembling the electroscope with the copper wire threaded through the straw and lid, with aluminum foil pieces attached to the end of the wire inside the jar.

II-Video Demonstration: (85points) (20%)

Directions: In a 4-7 min. video, make your own DIY electroscope (Please see the instructions
below) and explain how an electroscope works. To test your electroscope, use materials of your
choosing and rub it for a few seconds with your hand, then move the material close to the copper
wire edge.

Instructions on how to make an electroscope:

Materials Needed:
• A glass jar,
• 2 little pieces of aluminum foil (1×1-inch size), you need to put a hole in the top center of each
foil;
• A solid copper wire (recommended size is 14 AWG), a spiral one of the ends of the wire to make
a large surface area;
• Some electrical tape,
• A plastic lid cut into a circle the same size as the jar opening (you can use the plastic lid from any
plastic container);
• A small plastic tube (you can use a straw) shoved through the plastic lid.

The Design of making electroscope:

• To assemble the electroscope, take the copper wire and slide it through the plastic tube and make a
little hook at the bottom end of the copper wire. Put the 2 pieces of foil on the hook one after the
other using the hole that you made on each of the pieces of foil. The 2 pieces of foil should now be
touching together at the end of the hook.

• Take the plastic lid and put it on top of the jar and secure it with some electrical tape to make sure
the lid is firmly fixed on the top of the jar. When you’re done, you should do the testing.
