Introduction :
This is yet another important spinal remedy especially affecting the motor
nerves, known as the “Balm of Gilead”. Conium Maculatum is the remedy for
the disease of climateric age especially of women, if the symptoms correspond.
What conium is to the glands and capillary system. In many cases, conium may
be regarded as the “Aconite of Chronic Disease”.
In plant contains the active principles, conine , which is very poisonus. It
is notrorious as an ingredient of the state poison of ancient greeks, socrates was
killed by conium. This poisonus property, when potentised , proves to be an
excellent remedy, particularly suited to old men, old maids and old bachelors
and it was Hahnemann who first showed how remedy could be uitilised safely
as well as effectively.
Clinical :
Bladder inflammation, Breast affection, Bronchitis, Cancer, Cataract,
cholera, cough, eye affection, Injury, Jaundice, liver affection, ulcers and
vertigo etc.
Sphere of Action:
The seat of action of this remedy is centered on the nervous system,
particularly motor nerves first and later on the sensory nerves as well as, heart ,
cardiovascular system, glands and female genital organs.
Pathogenesis :
It powerfully depresses motor nerves leading to paralysis of the muscles
of the body as far as voluntary and reflex motions are concerned. It causes
paralysis of the motor nerve filaments of the cerebrospinal system. The sensory
nerves, spinal cord and brain are affected later on. It depresses the vagus
ganglia, resulting in fall of blood pressure and quick pulse, but lower the
temperature.
Constitution :
Make up body : It is mostly suited to old men & women. Persons having
debility and diseases caused by blow or fall.
Temperament : Melancholic and irritable temperament.
Relation with heat and cold :
Easily affected by slightest exposure to cold air.
Miasm : Psora is in the background.
Diathesis : Scrofulous diathesis
Guiding Symptoms :
1. The strongest characteristic of conium maculatum is its peculiar vertigo,
which is much aggravated by Turning the head side wise or looking
around or turning in bed.
2. Swelling and induration of glands after contusion or bruise.
3. Cancerous and scrofulous persons with enlarged glands.
4. Breast sore, hard and painful, especially during the menstrual period.
5. Object look red, rainbow colored, double vision, weakness of sight
aversion to light without inflammation , but with intense photophobia.
6. Cough when lying down, aggravated from slightest exposure to cold air.
7. Ascending type of paralysis remind of conium.
Mind :
The patient is morose and ill-humoured and easily angered.
He is very much quarrelsome and scolds always even at silly things.
Very forgetful, weak memory, is unable to sustain and mental effort.
Can not bear to be alone, dread of being alone, yet avoid society.
Ailments from : below or fall contusion, excitement or over work
Particular :
Headache :
Causation : Headache is caused by blow or fall , sexual excess.
Location : Lancination pain especially on the vertex and forehead in temples ,
semilateral.
Character of Headache :
stupefying pains in the head, excessive sensibility of brain.
Headache with numbness of the brain
Modalities :
Aggravation : When walking in the open air, from contact, motion and after
eating.
Amelioration : When lying in a recumbent position or while stooping , by
external pressure and closing the eyes.
Eyes : Eye troubles are caused by injury or blow and eye strain.
Gastro Intestinal Tract :
Tongue :
Tongue is swollen painful, stiff and paralysed. Bitter taste in the mouth.
Stomach :
There is no appetite, Cutting pain in the abdomen as from a knife. Rumbling
with painful tightness of abdomen .
Stool :
Cold Stool and cold flatulence .
Frequent ineffectual urging to stool, passes little at a time.
Urine :
There is great difficulty in voiding urine.
Pain when urinating urine is pale with grey or white sediment.
Menses :
Menses feeble or suppressed or stopped by taking cold or putting hands in cold
water.
Time : Too late
Duration : Of Short Duration
Quantity : Scanty
Glands :
As a result of bruises and injuries the glands are indurated as of a stony
hardness and also enlarged especially, stitching pain.
Respiratory Organ :
There is spasmodic parosysm of cough. Cough is worse at night.
Heart :
Conium is a very good drug for beast trouble and blood pressure.
Sweat :
The sweat of conium patient is also very peculiar and characteristic.
General Modalities :
Aggravation : At night, lying down, during or rising up in the bed.
Amelioration : In dark, from letting the affected limb hang down & by
motion.
