Industrialization/Modernization of the Agrarian Sector
For countless of years, the Philippine government has been fixing its eyes on the growth of the
urban areas. Government expenditures have been largely directed to the advancement of the country’s
core: Metro Manila. It has been dubbed as the crux of a good quality living. However, in the midst of
urban popularization, it seems like the nation has been forgetting something. A country cannot improve
holistically with even a portion of its part left behind. Therefore, I advocate for the industrialization of
the agrarian sector.
The industrialization of the agrarian sector will provide Filipino people with a wider array of
opportunities. Even though there has been a brewing debate about the potential harm of industrializing
the rural sector, I shall stay on my ground for we are in desperate measures. Industrialization of the
agrarian sector doesn’t necessarily have to mean eradicating agriculture. By industrialization, the
government shall modernize the rural sector by investing in advanced technologies that would increase
the agricultural production of the sector. By placing economic opportunities in rural areas, labor will not
only be saturated in the metro. Unemployment could be potentially and gradually cured. Many say that
the country should focus more on its educational endeavors; however, I believe that it won’t do much
help. With no economic opportunities inside the country, there won’t be anywhere else left to go than
outside. The uneven distribution of opportunities in the urban and rural areas renders it difficult for a
holistic development of the country. Metro manila has been a congested bottleneck of both rich and the
poor. People in the rural areas migrate to the core expecting for a better life ignorant of the cutthroat
competition brewing between different people in the job market.
It would be worth the try to empower our rural sector. Doing so would need the total
participation of the government. This may be through agricultural reforms that would further empower
our agricultural sector without prejudicing our local farmers along with their rights. The country should
help rural areas attract more investors through the invitation of business ventures. Moreover, boosting
their tourism drive is one great way to empower them through the help of establishing infrastructures.
Hopefully, if all goes well, this shall lead to generating job opportunities for Filipino people, and
minimizing congestion in the metro.
Essentially, making the rural areas more economically attractive will provide Filipinos with an
array of economic opportunities. Perhaps this could be our answer to a more sustainable economy as
one country, without leaving anyone behind.
