Cultural Conflicts between Canada and The Netherlands

INTRODUCTION

This is believed that tourism is the one of biggest trade industry on the globe . As said by a
traveller Wayne Chirisca, ‘‘Travelling unveils new dimensions of this world not known
to the naked eye’’(Good Reads, year) . However , being team member of Travel Awaits I
am going to focus on the conflicts between Canada and Netherlands on the basis of cultural
dimensions . Moreover , my agenda is to exchange my thoughts related to this notion with
delegate of No Limits Travels with a goal positive business deal. Furthermore, Canada has 20
world heritage sites. Whereas, the Netherlands has 10 recognised world heritage sites.
Besides it, Canada comprises collection of beautiful water bodies, mighty mountains and
dence forests. On other side, Netherlands has popular canals, historical monuments and
streets , and allot of antique masterpieces.

TIME ORIENTATION

For Dutch people time is money. ‘‘If you are not originally from the Netherlands, you
may have to get used to fact that Dutch always arrive on time’’[ CITATION Reg18 \l 16393 ].
Moreover ,they are Monochromic by nature, they deal with with one agenda at one time .
Furthermore, they always have fixed timings for starting and ending meetings along with
scheduled breaks. Besides it, they believe in doing conversation in sequence, any distraction
is considered as disrespect . So if you are travelling in a group you need to be punctual.

On other side Canadians are happily Polychromic. They are flexible with their schedules and
takes breaks as much required according to their comfort. Moreover, they appreciates
listening each other’s thoughts. For instance, in Canadian education institutes some lectures
are done till late night and residents are comfortable with that.

COMMUNICATION

It is believed that folks of Netherlands are very straight forward and they can frankly talk
about anything with anyone. Moreover, ‘‘Dutch tend to speak in friendly tone of voice and
often in short sentences’[ CITATION Dut \p www.cultureatlas.sbs.com \t \l 16393 ] .
Furthermore, the Dutch language is full of courtesy and politeness. Though, this can be
judged by having a conversation with a Dutch mate. However, if you are planning trip to
Amsterdam you not need to worry about local people behaviour. Apart from this ,
maintaining eye contact is considered as high valued . Perhaps, there are some gestures which
should be avoided such as, pointing your index finger on someone is considered very
disrespectful. Apart from this , they are not multi linguistic. However , they only speak ,
study and write only Dutch, as it is their native and national language. Also, they use very
heavy vocal to justify point of communication.

Talking about Canadians, they also showcases positive traits of communication like Dutch
people. Moreover, Canada is already a diverse republic , so they can easily get gel up with

other nation people. However, this North American country already have great influence
European Communities from a long period. Furthermore, Canadians prefers offering hugs to
show a positive bond and they are always give back ‘thank you’ to appreciate other person
assistance. Besides it, Canada has good collection languages such as English, French ,
Punjabi , Hindi, Cantonese, Japanese, etc.

POWER DISTANCE

In this dimension both the countries falls under the same parameter of low power distance.
As, they are democratic republics so they believe in equality in each and every team member
of a business firm. Moreover, they extremely hate separating respect levels of different
designations according to hierarchy chart. Besides it, calling boss by his name by every
colleague is considered comfortable gesture. Whereas, according to Asian working trends it is
claimed disrespectful. Furthermore , in Canadian and Dutch work society both a entry level
worker and a executive level worker are judged equally without any discrimination. Apart
from this , opinions of both are equally listened and are implemented for the company
growth. For your information both the nation shares very great trade relationship.

UNCERTAINITY AVOIDANCE

According to Dutch trends the graph of uncertainty avoidance of Netherlands is high.

Although, the residents of this nation are opposite of pupil who follows unorthodox
behaviour and ideas. Moreover, in Dutch culture the rules and policies are on first priority. So
when travelling to Holland rules and regulations are clearly need to kept in the mind.

In Canada the score of uncertainty avoidance is less as compare to the Netherlands. Moreover
, the Canadian folks are less oriented to their rules. However , they are more flexible to try
and implement new theories. Besides it, they are positively welcome new ideas.

SPACE ORIENTATION

The residents of Netherlands are fond of living in their own space and they specifically hate
any type of interference by others. Even though, upholstery is arranged in such a way that
everyone sit in his or her own space without any disturbance. So, if you are in Holland don’t
try to get closer to anyone without his permission.

In case of Canadians , the scenario is same . They also love their private space and they
always keep a one mitre distance from another person. Specially at a workplace more
closeness is considered as a harassment.

MASCULINITY-FEMININITY

‘‘The fundamental issue here is what motivates people, wanting to be the best or liking what
you do’’[ CITATION Gee \l 16393 ]. The Netherland residents believe in a good work life
balance and they always wish for more quality time. So , according to this they come under
Femininity.

On other hand , Canadians keeps themselves busy in competing with other and performing
best in their every task. Moreover , work is more important for them than leisure time.
Though , they fall under category of Masculinity.

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

Both the nations shares very warm relation ,since from world war-II. As back in the history
Canadian Government assisted Netherlands get liberation from Nazis and also welcomed
Royal Dutch Family by giving refuge to them in Ottawa. Moreover , in present period
Canadian Tulip Festival is the biggest example of good bond of relationship between both
countries. As, thousand of tulips sent to Canada from Holland and the Queen of Netherlands
gives her presence on this occasion every year as a token of homage to Canadian soldiers.
Furthermore, Netherlands is considered Canada’s notable trade country. Besides it,
Netherlands falls under the top ten list of Canada’s top ten export Destinations[ CITATION
Can \l 16393 ].

CONCLUSION

At the last of this report I would like to conclude that both the countries can hike their
economy by implementing strategies of positive outbound tourism with each other’s
assistance. Also, this will incline the Gross Domestic Product score of both.
