1 Introduction
This technical file contains detailed information about the technical properties of the product. Basic informa-
tion is given in the "Technical Data (TD 61) - General Section".
1.1 Function description
De-energized tap-changers are used for setting the voltage of oil-immersed transformers. In contrast to on-
load tap-changers, the required winding taps must be set with the transformer switched off on the high-volt-
age and low-voltage side.
The de-energized tap-changer is changed over from one operating position to the next by rotating an insulat-
ing drive shaft. The de-energized tap-changer is actuated using the TAPMOTION® DD manual drive, the
TAPMOTION® ED motor-drive unit, a hand wheel or an operating wrench.
1.2 Switching concept
The design of the de-energized tap-changer is based on a modular system that enables a product range for
6 different basic connections:

De-energized tap-changers can be configured for a wide range of applications through parallel connection of
several contact planes. The current splitting can be forced through the transformer winding. Therefore, when
ordering please state whether and how often the winding is split, since this influences the design and the
type name of the de-energized tap-changer.

2.1 Contact life
The contact life of de-energized tap-changers installed in network transformers is usually much longer than
the service life of the associated transformer. Observe the notes about maintenance in the MR operating in-
structions of the de-energized tap-changer.
2.2 Temperature range
When using a vegetable oil as insulating fluid, the permissible temperature range for oper-
ation of the DEETAP® DU/COMTAP® ARS is limited. Please observe the relevant infor-
mation in the specific order documents and on the indicator plate on the drive.
You can operate the DEETAP® DU/COMTAP® ARS in the rated load range at oil temperatures of -25 °C to

2.3 Rated withstand voltages of the internal insulation
The maximum permissible operating voltage at the individual insulation distances of the de-energized tap-
changer corresponds to half the value of the rated short-duration power frequency withstand voltages listed
in the following tables.
For applications with forced current splitting, e.g. for the DEETAP® DU 1622, the rated lightning im-
pulse withstand voltage between the parallel planes of a phase is 195 kV.

The insulating performance of the de-energized tap-changer insulation is determined by rated withstand vol-
tages (following tables) that correspond to the grades required in practice. Stress on the internal de-ener-
gized tap-changer insulation mainly occurs during the impulse voltage test and during the induced voltage
test of the transformer. It also depends on the position of the de-energized tap-changer.

3 Special models
In addition to the standard design, the modular system on which the de-energized tap-changer DEETAP®
DU is based enables a large number of special designs to be configured.
Examples of frequently used special designs are listed below.
Please contact us regarding technical clarification and optimum design of special types.
3.1 Max. rated through-current over 2000 A
De-energized tap-changer for max. rated through-currents of more than 2000 A can be configured through
parallel connection of more than two contact planes. The current division can be enforced through the trans-
former winding. When requesting a quotation and placing an order, please state whether and how often the
winding is divided, since this influences the design and the type name of the de-energized tap-changer. Ob-
serve the explanation of the de-energized tap-changer designation. [► 12]
3.2 De-energized tap-changer with increased insulation to ground (Um > 245 kV)
and increased internal insulation

4 Drive
The drive sets the de-energized tap-changer to the required operating position.
4.1 Hand wheel or hexagonal shaft on the de-energized tap-changer head
This type of drive is limited to de-energized tap-changer types with relatively small drive torque. The hand
wheel is connected to the insulating shaft of the de-energized tap-changer via the Geneva gear. For higher
driving torques, a de-energized tap-changer head with hexagonal shaft and operation via operating wrench
is available.
The de-energized tap-changer is equipped with various safety devices [► 78].
A dimensional drawing of the manual drive and the hexagonal shaft are provided in the appendix.

4.2 TAPMOTION® DD manual drive
The TAPMOTION® DD manual drive (8 revolutions per switching operation on the hand crank) can be used
for actuating the de-energized tap-changer. The TAPMOTION® DD is limited to certain de-energized tap-
changer applications. The manual drive is mounted on the side of the transformer tank and is connected with
the de-energized tap-changer head via a drive shaft, a bevel gear and coupling parts. Safety devices are
provided to prevent the equipment from being actuated unintentionally or by unauthorized persons. Safety
equipment for automatic tripping of the transformer circuit breakers and for monitoring the equality of posi-
tions between the de-energized tap-changer and the manual drive must be installed.

5 Safety devices
To prevent the equipment from being actuated unintentionally or by unauthorized persons, the de-energized
tap-changer and drive are provided with the following safety devices:
5.1 De-energized tap-changer with hand wheel/operating wrench on the de-
energized tap-changer head
The design with hand wheel/operating wrench on the de-energized tap-changer head has the following safe-
ty devices:
▪ Mechanical locking
▪ The de-energized tap-changer can only be operated after removing the padlock. The hand wheel is re-
movable; it can be locked using a padlock.
▪ Electrical tripping and locking device for the transformer circuit breakers using the built–in cam switch
(see functional principle on the basis of connection diagram 1531579) is present. Ensure that the trans-
former is off before a separation of the de-energized tap-changer contacts takes place when activating
the hand wheel/operating wrench.
5.2 TAPMOTION® DD manual drive
The design with TAPMOTION® DD manual drive has the following safety equipment:
▪ Mechanical locking
▪ Locking provided via a padlock on the manual drive.
▪ The tap-change supervisory control is located in a housing on the de-energized tap-changer head (di-
mensional drawing 725735 [► 260]/725737 [► 261]). In connection with the respective drive, it fulfills
the following functions (for the special design "Installation below the cover", the attachment of a tap-
change supervisory control is not possible!):
– Automatically tripping the transformer circuit breakers when the de-energized tap-changer is operat-
ed.
– Preventing the circuit breaker from being reenergized as long as the de-energized tap-changer or
drive are not in a defined operating position.

5.3 TAPMOTION® ED motor-drive unit
The design with TAPMOTION® ED motor-drive unit has the following safety equipment:
▪ A mechanical locking device such as a padlock can be used or a cylinder lock can be installed.
▪ The tap-change supervisory control is located in a housing on the de-energized tap-changer head (di-
mensional drawing 725735 [► 260]/725737 [► 261]). In connection with the respective drive, it fulfills
the following functions (for the special design "Installation below the cover", the attachment of a tap-
change supervisory control is not possible!):
– Automatically moving the connected transformer circuit breakers to the open position when the de-
energized tap-changer is operated.

– Preventing the circuit breaker from being reenergized as long as the de-energized tap-changer or
drive are not in a defined operating position.

6 Installing the de-energized tap-changer in the transformer
You can install the de-energized tap-changer in a standard or bell-type tank transformer.
In addition to the installation variants specified above, you can also fasten the de-ener-
gized tap-changer under the transformer cover. In this special design, please note that
electrical tap-change supervisory control directly on the de-energized tap-changer is not
possible. Optical tap position indication for installation or assembly purposes is available
directly on the de-energized tap-changer head. Further information about this special de-
sign is available on request.
Always install the de-energized tap-changer in the transformer in accordance with the relevant installation
and commissioning instructions.
Note the following points:
▪ Use the de-energized tap-changer only with the transformer specified in the order.
▪ Only trained and qualified personnel may install the de-energized tap-changer, connect it to the electri-
cal system, and put it into operation.
▪ The maximum permissible deviation for vertical installation is 1°
▪ The wiring diagram is prepared based on the order and is enclosed with the delivery
▪ For certain de-energized tap-changer designs, due to the large installation length, you must provide for
and install an insulating attachment between the lower cage ring and the transformer (for attachment of
the de-energized tap-changer on the lower cage ring). The attachment must center the de-energized
tap-changer and ensure the device does not twist. Thermal deformation in length of L = +6/-6 mm must
be taken into account
▪ In the event of a difference between the de-energized tap-changer head and the oil level in the oil con-
servator of more than 5 m, due to the static overpressure, please contact Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen
GmbH.
