1. If Aries becomes Karakamsa, there will be trouble from the rats or cats.
2. If Taurus becomes Karakamsa, trade or business is expected.
3. If Gemini becomes Karakamsa and is aspected by benefic planets,
one may develop corpulence. By the aspect of malefic planets to Gemini Karakamsa, one

4. If Cancer becomes Karakamsa, aspected by benefic planets, the native may suffer from dropsy or ascites. If the malefic planets aspect Cancer Karakamsa, the
native may suffer from white or black leprosy.
5. If Leo becomes Karakamsa, the native may
suffer from the disease due to dog-bite.
6. If Virgo becomes Karakamsa, the results of Gemini Karakamsa viz. Corpulence and
itch may be mentioned. If the malefic planets aspect Virgo Karakamsa, fear
from accident may be expected.
7. If Libra becomes Karakamsa,
the native lives by business or he is clever in affairs of sale and purchase.
8. If Scorpio becomes Karakamsa, in its first half, danger from water, in its second half, danger from reptiles

the Atmakaraka in between 0 to 15 degrees and the second half means longitude of Atmakaraka in between 15-30 degrees.
9. If Sagittarius becomes Karakamsa, gradual fall from high place or from vehicle may happen.
10. If Capricorn becomes Karakamsa and is aspected by the aquatic planets, dangers from leeches
or crocodiles may happen. If aspected by Khechara planets,

high government officer, if Atmakaraka is exalted or placed in own or benefic Navamsa. While Navamsa Lagna is occupied by benefics and the last planet from
Atmakaraka is a benefic planet, the native attains salvation or Moksha. In the above if benefics and malefics are connected, the native attains heaven. If the
malefics only are connected, the native attains neither heaven nor hell.
13. If the Sun occupies the 2nd house from Karakamsa, the native leads
a political life. If the Sun is debilitated there, he becomes a low Government servant or
often gets defeated in politics.
14. If the Moon and Venus occupy
the 2nd house from Karakamsa, the native luxurious and erudite, earning by the dissemination of learning to others. The Moon
there is responsible for giving riches and luxuries, while Venus is responsible for his earnings through scholarships. The quantum of the above results varies
according to the relative strengths of the Moon and Venus by their sign placement and longitudes.
15. If Mars occupies the 2nd house from Karakamsa, make threefold predictions:
(i) Mars 0-10 degrees metallurgy, chemicals etc.
(ii) Mars 10-20 degrees wears a weapon by name
Kunta
(iii) Mars 20-30 degrees goldsmithy, blacksmithy, cooking
etc.
If the native is a Brahmin, he may live by paurohitya, cremation
rites, homas and yajnas etc.
16. If Mercury occupies the 2nd house from Karakamsa make four fold predictions:
(i) 0-7 deg 30 min Businessman or merchant
(ii) 7 deg 30 min – 15 deg Weavers, cloth merchants or those connected with textiles.
(iii) 15-22 deg 30 min Sculptors

(iii) 20-30 deg lives hundred years
19. If Saturn occupies the 2nd house from Karakamsa, the native makes his living by performing yajnas or adheres to ancient customs and traditions or continues
his ancestral vocations. In the next aphorism there are two chakras (conjunctions). Hence three results may be mentioned for Saturn in the 2nd house of
Karakamsa.
(i) 0-10 deg Ancestral vocation
(ii) 10-20 deg Bodyguard or Aid de Camp
(iii) 20-30 deg A thief or a cheater
20. If Rahu occupies the 2nd house from Karakamsa make five fold predictions:
(i) 0-6 deg Ancestral vocation
(ii) 6-12 deg Bodyguard or Aid de Camp

23. The Moon in 4th house from Karakamsa aspected by Venus makes the native a prosperous navigator. The same can be mentioned about the Moon in
Sagittarius aspected by Venus.
24. If the Moon alone occupies the 4th house from Karakamsa and is aspected by the Sun and Rahu, the native dies by snake bite. If benefics aspect, then danger
of death by snake bite is averted.
25. By the association of benefics alone in the above, the native becomes a curer of snake bites or a dealer of antidotes.
26. If the 4th house from Karakamsa is occupied by the Moon alone, aspected by Mars and unaspected by any other planet, his house burns away or he burns
other’s houses. If the benefics also aspect, the house will be half-burnt. If the benefics along with Venus aspect, the danger of fire is averted.
27. If the 4th house of Karakamsa is occupied by the Moon and aspected by Mars and Jupiter, the houses adjacent to the native’s house may catch fire but not the
native’s house.
28. If the 4th house of Karakamsa is occupied by Gulika, unaspected by the benefics, he admires poison to others. But if Gulika in the 4th house of Karakamsa is
aspected by the malefics, he dies of swallowing poison.
29. If Gulika in the 4th house of Karakamsa is aspected only by the Moon and connected with benefics, the native gets the stolen money. If Gulika in the 4th house
of Karakamsa receives the aspect of the Moon and is connected with the malefics, the native himself becomes a thief.
30. If Gulika in the 4th house of Karakamsa is aspected by Mercury, the native will have hydrocile or swelling of the testicles.
31. If Ketu occupies the 2nd house of Karakamsa and is aspected by the malefics, the ears of the native will be cut off. If the benefics also aspect, the native suffers
from ear diseases.
32. Ketu in 2nd from Karakamsa aspected by Venus makes the native perform yajnas.
33. Ketu in 2nd from Karakamsa aspected by Saturn and Mercury makes the native a eunuch.
34. Ketu in 2nd from Karakamsa aspected by Mercury and Venus makes the native talk repeatedly or gives tautological expression.
35. If Ketu in 2nd from Karakamsa is aspected by Saturn make two predictions:
(i) Saturn in 0-15 deg associated with another planet aspect Ketu in 2nd house from Karakamsa, the native becomes ascetic.
(ii) Saturn in 15-30 deg associated with another planet aspect Ketu in 2nd house from Karakamsa, the native becomes a servant.
36. If Ketu in the 2nd house from Karakamsa is aspected by Saturn alone, the native becomes a feigned ascetic or spoiled sanyasin.
to be continued with examples and further more rules.

Atmakaraka in Navamsa
Posted on July 30, 2011
Given that the Navamsa chart (D-9) illustrates the dharma and karmic landscape of the native spanning life times, the Atmakaraka’s house position therein is very
important to study the spirituality of the native. First take the house placement of the Atmakaraka in the Navamsa chart. Then, count the number of signs from its
position to the Navamsa Lagna. Then, count the number of signs from its position to the Navamsa Lagna. The house arrived at gives the results of the
Atmakaraka’s house position. Additionally, the strength of the natural karaka of that house should be noted both in Navamsa as well as Rasi charts. The Rasi chart
gives more suitable results for great personalities such as Sri Krsna or Sri Caitanya, while the Navamsa is suitable for all others.
Result of the Atmakaraka in the Astrological houses:
1. Nobility and birth in a royal family result if the Atmakaraka is in the Navamsa Lagna or 1st house. High attainments and position likened to those of a king result if
the lord of the Navamsa Lagna conjoins the AK even if the native is born in humble conditions. If, on the other hand, the AK aspects the Navamsa Lagna, then the
native enjoys royalty from birth. The strength of Raja-yogas also depends on the strength, position and associations of the Sun, who is the karaka of the first house.
2. If the Atmakaraka is in 2nd house (lagna in the 12th from AK), then the native is a renunciate and possibly even a saint (if other criteria additionally apply in the
horoscope). Saturn is the karaka of the 12th house, and thus indicates the path of either a sannyasi (a formal renunciate) or someone who gives charity for
humanitarian purposes. If Venus is strong, and especially if Ketu and Saturn join or mutually aspect Venus, then the native performs tapasya or yogic austerities.
3. If the Atmakaraka is in 3rd house (lagna in the 11th from AK), then the native may have many high social contacts, be popular and influential, wealthy and
successful in many undertakings. He has friends among powerful and successful persons.
4. If the Atmakaraka is in 4th house (lagna in the 10th from AK), then the native’s work is an
essential contributor to the successful performance of Dharma. The
strength of various karakas of 10th house indicates the avenues through which karma is performed. If Mercury and Jupiter are strong, then he is benevolent, well-
linked and moves in a variety of circles. If the Sun is strong, then the native enjoys the effects of raja-yoga. If Saturn is strong, then he purges the results of past
sins by hard work and sacrifice.
5. The 5th house position of Atmakaraka (lagna in the 9th from AK) indicates a very truthful person who follows the dictates of dharma very seriously. The results of
much punya bring opportunities to perform sadhana (spiritual practice), to meet and learn from advanced spiritualists and to serve the cause of promoting Truth in
the world.
6. If the Atmakaraka is in 6th house (lagna in the 8th from AK), then the native confronts many challenges which result from stigmatic karmas from past lives. The
native with such a placement of the AK is recommended to propitiate Saturn. More importantly, they should perform the Satya Narayana Vrata regularly or as often
as possible. Recitation of the Maha-mantra is ultimately beneficial for anyone in current era, kali-yuga.
7. The position of the Atmakaraka in 7th house (lagna in 7th from AK) is highly auspicious and blesses the native with a good spouse and the enjoyments of many
beneficial associations. The native is pure in heart, well-intentioned and compassionate to all.
8. If the Atmakaraka is in the 8th house (lagna in the 6th from AK), then the results are similar to those for the 6th house. The native may confront vexing problems
which are hard to solve. Physical ailments, challenging longevity, in addition to emotional and domestic discontinuity may be problematic for such natives.
Recitation of the Maha-mantra and the Vishnu-sahasra-nama stotram, as well as performance of the Satya Narayana Vrata is ultimately beneficial. The native
should also try to practice truthfulness and straightforwardness in all dealings.
9. The 9th house position of the Atmakaraka (lagna in 5th from AK) is perhaps the most auspicious and brings in full results of bhagya (fortune) to the native. A
powerful Sun brings raja-yoga and enables the native to be very influential in educational and spiritual circles. If Jupiter is powerful, then the native becomes a guru
in his own right, after receiving the blessings of self-realized souls or those advanced in higher knowledge. Materially speaking, such a native has no concerns in
this world.
10. If the Atmakaraka is in 10th house (lagna in the 4th from AK), then happiness through family, home and mother are well-earned. Blessings through assets and
property accrue, as well as respect and love through close allies and associates. The degree to which such results manifest depends on the strength, placement
and association of the Moon in the Navamsa chart.
11. Courage and capability is the execution of any task result when the Atmakaraka is in the 11th house of the chart (lagna in the 3rd from AK). The native is
intelligent and possesses firmness of mind and unwavering determination in the performance of duties. He has the ability to solve the problems quickly and to act
decisively in crisis situations. If Mars is strong, then the native receives the results of raja-yoga akin to that of Ruchaka Maha- Purusa-yoga. The native is respected
or admired by others due to valor and fearlessness in any confrontational situation.
12. If the Atmakaraka is in the 12th house (lagna in the 2nd from AK), then the native easily attains wealth as the result of the blessings of Lakshmi-devi, the
consort of Vishnu. If simultaneously Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are in strength, then the native may achieve knowledge due to the blessings of the goddess
Sarasvati. If the lord of the 2nd house joins that of the 5th and/or 9th, then the native enjoys the results of Dhana-yoga (wealth).

Judging the Karaka
The three viz.: house, lord and karaka form the most important aspect of the chart. If all three are weak or afflicted, only then we can say that a particular area of life
is ruined in the native’s life.
The relationship between the lord and the karaka will show the native’s interaction with others.
Count from the lord to the significator to know what the native has to do.
Count from the significator to the lord to know what the native can aspect.
Example: If when judging a relationship, the seventh lord and Venus are in trines to each other, then the interaction is a give (fifth) and take (ninth) relationship,
which is very healthy, as the roles are defined. Instead, if the seventh lord and Venus are in sixth/eighth from each other, then a lot of misunderstanding can occur
between the native and their partner.
The relationship between the karaka and the house will show the native’s luck.
Count from the significator to the house to know the native’s attitude.
Count from the house to the significator to know the fortune.
Example: If the Sun is in the eighth house from the lagna, the native will have a very wrong attitude towards keeping themselves healthy and fit, and could neglect
himself. The result of this attitude is bad health.
Strength of the Karaka
When judging the placement of the Karaka, the various houses and relationships need defining. To judge the happiness one gains from ones interaction with the
world, one should judge the bhava lord with reference to the karaka of the house. For example, the primary fifth house karaka is Jupiter, which is the karaka for
children. Other external manifestations of the fifth house are students (Mercury), lovers (Venus), subordinates (Saturn) etc. To judge the native’s fortune with
respect to his relationship with his children, see the position relationship between Jupiter and the fifth lord.
• The Kendra placements are auspicious and show that children will be naturally drawn towards the native,
and there is a good relationship between the native and
the children.
• The trikona
placement is auspicious and shows a healthy mutually reciprocal relationship between the native and his children. This also indicates an active
interest in relating with his children.
• The 3-11 relationship is conducive
towards a growing friendship with children.
• The 2-12 relationship shows a mismatch in timing the relationship is very unbalanced and requires either lot of giving (12th) or expenses (2nd).
• The 6-8 relationship is the worst, and indicates complications and complete mismatch in ideals and characters. A lot of misfortune with children
is experienced
due to this.
CHARA KARAKAS
atmadhikah kaladibhirnabhogah saptanamastamanyam va
The planet with the highest longitude in degrees and minutes, among the seven or eight planet (schemes) is the King and Soul or self significator (Atmakaraka).
The seven charakaraka scheme applies to the jadatma while the eight charakaraka scheme applies to the jivatma because of (a) the desire factor indicated by
Rahu which is the primary cause of rebirth of the jivatma and (b) the jadatma cannot procreate and hence cannot have a chara putra karaka (child significator).
atha’ham sampravaksyami grahanatmadikarakan
saptaravyadisanyantan rahvantan va’ stasankhyakan
amsaih samaugnahau dvau cedrahvantan cintayet tada
saptaiva karakanevam kecidastau pracaksate
We shall now discuss two schemes of the atma and other karakas (charakaraka schemes) involving the seven planets from the Sun [to Saturn] and either including
or excluding Rahu. These are based on the longitude of planets irrespective of signs.
Maharsi Parasara speaks of two charakaraka schemes involving (1) seven planets from Sun to Saturn and (2) eight planets including Rahu. We can infer the
following:
are two charakaraka schemes the (1) seven and (2) eight planet schemes.
That there
The seven charakaraka scheme uses the seven planets from Sun to Saturn and when
the longitude in degrees of two planets is the same, then Rahu is also
considered.
The eight
charakaraka scheme uses the eight planets from Sun to Rahu.
Ketu is completely excluded from both the schemes.
atma suryadikhetanam madhye hyamsadhiko grahah
amsasamye kaladhikyat tatsamye vikaladhikah
budhau rasikaladhikyat graho naivatmakarakah
amsadhikah karakah syadalpabhago ‘ntyakarakah
madhyamso madhyakhetah syadupakhetah sa eva
hi
vilomagamanadrahoramsah sodhyah khavahnitah
amsakramadadho’ dhahsthascarakhyah karaka iti
The atmakaraka planet is that one whose degrees are the greatest in number among the planets the Sun etc. If the degrees are identical the one having more
kalas (minutes) and if the kalas are also identical, the one having more vikalas (seconds) will be the Atmakaraka planet. The learned astrologer should not accept
as Atma Karaka planet that one who has more signs and minutes. The planet who has the highest number of degrees is the Atma Karaka, the one who has the
lowest number is the Antyakaraka and the one who has neither highest nor the lowest number of degrees is the Madhyakheta and he is also the Upakheta. Due to
retrograde motion, the degrees of Rahu should be deducted from 30 and the remainder should be considered as the Atma Karaka. The other charakarakas follow
in the order of the decreasing longitudes of the planets.
tasyanusaranadamatyah
In a similar manner, the planet with the second highest longitude is declared as the Amatyakaraka of the chart.
tasya bhrata
The planet with the third highest longitude (among the seven or eight planets) is declared the bhratrakaraka, the significator of siblings and master.
tasya mata
The planet with the fourth highest longitude (among the seven or eight planets) is declared the matrakaraka, the significator of mother and shelter.
tasya pita
The planet with the fifth highest longitude (among the seven or eight planets) is declared the pitrakaraka, the significator of father (both pater and progenitor).
tasya putra
The planet with the sixth highest longitude (among the seven or eight planets) is declared the putrakaraka, the significator of children and followers.
Putrakaraka does not exist in the seven planet scheme as clearly mentioned by Maharsi Parasara and Jaimini.
tasya jnatih
The planet with the seventh highest longitude in the eight planet scheme (or sixth highest longitude in the seven planet scheme) is declared the jnatikaraka,
signifying relatives and colleagues.
tasya darasca
The planet with the least longitude is declared the darakaraka signifying spouse, business and wealth.
Atmakaraka is King
Yatha rajajnaya vipra putramatyadayo janah
Samartha lokakaryesu tathaivanyepi karakah
The wishes of the king (atmakaraka) are executed by the subjects who are like the son (putrakaraka) and the ministers and officials (amatyakaraka). Similarly all
other activities indicated by the various karaka are executed by such relations/people indicated by the other chara (or naisargika) karaka based on the approval of
the king (atmakaraka).
This indicates that Atmakaraka is the most important planet where the various activities of the life indicated by the various naisargika karaka and relationships
sustained by the various people indicated by the charakaraka will need the explicit approval or support of the atmakaraka. The rajayoga occur by the association
between the atmakaraka and either putrakaraka or amatyakaraka. Parasara explains this aspect in more detail bringing out the importance of these two
charakaraka along with the atmakaraka.
If there is a replacement of the atmakaraka by the amatyakaraka then a karma yogi is born who shall place his karma above his own self and shall achieve
stupendous results by the self (atmakaraka) sacrifice.
Strength and Desire
• Those karaka that are in quadrants (1, 4, 7 & 10) to the atmakaraka are fully supported by it and are strong; those in panaphara houses (2, 5, 8 & 11) are weaker
and those in apoklimas houses (3, 6, 9 & 12) are the weakest.
• Those signs/ planets aspected (rasi drsti) or conjoined the atmakaraka are the strongest as they have the personal interference of the king (native himself). These
are the external or known wishes of the native.
• The planets/signs aspected by the atmakaraka
by full, ¾, ½ or ¼ aspects (graha drsti) show the desires and the extent of such desires of the atma. These are the
hidden or internal wishes of the native.
atmanukulamevatra bhavanti phaladayakah | pratikule yatha bhupe sarve’ matyadayo dvija ||
karya kartum manusyanam na samartha bhavanti hi | tatha’tmakarake krure na’nye svasubhadayakah||
anukule nrpe yadvat sarve’ matyadayo dvija | nasubham kurvate tadavananye svasubhadayakah ||
If the atmakaraka favors the activity and the people concerned (I.e. both the naisargika and charakaraka) then the work is surely accomplished. If the atmakaraka
does not approve of either the activity (naisargika karaka) or the concerned people (charakaraka) then the accomplishment is difficult. If the atmakaraka disfavors
both the activity and people, then the accomplishment is impossible. The amatyakaraka and others become dysfunctional if they do not have the support of the
atmakaraka i.e. the profession/ career and other works that the native wishes to do, as indicated by the 10th lord or amatyakaraka, cannot be accomplished
satisfactorily if they are unfavorable to the atmakaraka. Similarly, an adverse atmakaraka can prove to be very cruel towards the activities it does not support. Also
the malfeasance of other karaka is not felt when the atmakaraka itself is favorable.
If other significators can exert all their strength and resources to execute a task, and yet atmakaraka is not favorable or adverse to the activity, the task cannot be
accomplished and will become fruitless. The various activities are indicated by (1) the houses & lords, (2) their Arudha pada and (3) their karaka (all three types).
The houses show the resources and those in quadrants show the maximum resources, panaphara show middling resources and apoklimas show negligible
resources. Of these quadrants, the tenth house has maximum resources followed by the seventh, fourth and first house from the atmakaraka (in rasi or other
divisional chart). In this manner the strength of the houses indicates the resources available. The lords of the houses show the people available for the task/ activity.
Those lords in quadrants indicate easy availability of people, panaphara difficult availability (perhaps some monetary benefits have to be given to convince them to
do the work) while apoklimas indicates non availability. Planets in quadrants and trikona (first, fourth, fifth, seventh, ninth & tenth houses) from the atmakaraka are
competent to do its bidding while those in dusthana (6, 8 and 12) would not be able to do it for reasons of ill health (sixth & eighth houses) or losses anticipated
(twelfth house) and those in trika (third, sixth & eleventh houses) will do the opposite or act inimically towards the atmakaraka and will have to be subdued using the
niti sastra of sama (compromise — eleventh house), dama (money/temptation — twelfth house), danda (punishment — sixth house) and bheda (discord/divide and
