WHAT IS BIOFIL?
Biofil is the acronym for Biological Filtration.
A natural process that uses Biodegradation
to break down organic compound.
WHAT IS A BIODIGESTER?
The Biofil Digester is a passive
 decentralized waste water treatment
 system that uses aerobic decomposition
and micro-organisms to break down both
 solid and liquid waste .
HOW DOES BIOFIL DIGESTER WORKS?
The Biofil digester is an aerobic decomposition system that treats toilet waste
and flush water in the chamber. It breaks down the toilet waste completely
with oxygen in a way that odor is not generated. The chamber itself is filter,
when you flush your water closet (WC), the digester filters the waste water
through grades of stones, fiber-net, coconut husk and porous concrete,
allowing non-toxic clean and odorless water to drain out to your graders, soak
way or gutter, leaving the toilet waste (feces) in a suspended habitat where
oxygen gets to every part of it. Under those conditions, millions of
environmental friendly micro organism and bacteria feed on the toilet waste,
making them disappear completely (Biodegradation)
THE 3 COMPONENTS OF A FUNCTIONAL
                      DIGESTER
The digester operates as a filter via (RAB SYSTEM)
Rapid separation of solids and liquids
 Aerobic composting of solids (residue)
 Bio-filtration waste water.
ADVANTAGE OF BIOFIL DIGESTER OVER CONVENTIONAL SEPTIC TANKS
 Low cost of construction
 Environmental friendly
 Produces no odor
 Promotes good sanitation
 No sludge is formed
 Takes less space to construct
Cheaper then septic or manhole system
Takes less time to build (maximum 2 days)
 Very hygienic
                        DISADVANTAGE OF BIOFIL DIGESTER
Avoid putting diapers, nappies or plastics into the chamber
Avoid the use of harsh detergents to wash toilet.
TYPES OF BIOFIL DIGESTERS
The types of Biofil digesters use depends on the
size which also depends on the numbers of users
 Small size [4ft x 3ft; 1-20 users]
 Medium size [6ft x 4ft; 20-50 users]
 Big size [6ft x 4ft; over 100 users]
NOTE: All Biofil digester types have a depth of 3ft.
MATERIALS FOR CONSTRUCTION OF BIOFIL DIGESTER
 3 bags of cement
 3 wheel barrows of sand
3 wheel barrows of chippings or water friendly stones materials provided by the clients
 30 pieces of blocks
2 pieces of iron rod (115 inches)
 Pieces of binding wire
Treated fiber (coconut husk) - ½ bag
Treated net (mosquito net) - 2 yards
 Perforated plastic - 1 piece
 3’’ PVC pipe
 4’’ PVC pipe
Biozyme – 1 sachet materials provided by Installer
 4’’ bend – 2 pieces
 3’’ vent cap – 2 pieces
 ½ bag of charcoal
FUNCTIONS OF MATERIALS IN BIOFIL DIGESTER
 Fiber net (mosquito net)
Helps to filter the waste water. Also prevent the biozyme from draining out of digester.
 Charcoal
Removes the bad odor from the digester. Also acts as oxidation agents.
 Treated fiber (coconut husk)
Prevent the biozyme in the perforated basket from draining out. Also creates a
condusive atmosphere for the microbes to multiply
 Perforated basket
It serves as a reservoir that receives the feces and waste water from the WC.
Retains the feces while the waste water is filtered off through rapid separation.
 4’’ PVC pipe
Collects the feces and waste water from the WC into the perforated basket.
Act as the inlet pipe.
 3’’ PVC pipe
Discharge waste water into the soil. Acts as outlet pipe.
 3’’ vent cap
The vent cap placed on the pipe allows for ventilation
 4’’ Bench
This helps to control the flow of feces and waste water into the perforated basket.
 Biozyme
This is the organic chemical containing micro-organism that helps to break down the
solid feces
 Chippings
These are stones that as ....
FIRST STEP IN BIOFIL DIGESTER CONSTRUCTION
Evaluation
 Site Inspection
Check the topography of the land
Check the water table of this area
Confirm the number of users in the house
Confirm the spot / location to construct the Biofil digester
Confirm the presence of drainage, gutters, gardens.
CONSTRUCTION OF BIOFIL DIGESTER
Dig the pit for laying the block
Take measurement of length and width. Always make sure an extra 1 foot is added to the
original measurement. For example (small biofil digester of 4ft x 3ft), measure out 5ft x 4ft.
the extra 1foot provide an inner perimeter for the accuracy measurement.
Note: Every biofil digester has a depth of 3ft
Create a slope for easy and fast drainage
Lay your blocks in 2 chambers
Construction of out let pipe using 3’’ pipe
Construction of in let pipe using 4’’ pipe
Casting of floor (sloppy) towards the outlet pipe
 Construction of Biofil digester slabs
Construction of a 2ft tall pipe with vent cap for ventilation
 Allow 2 days for dryness
INSTALLATION OF BIOFIL DIGESTER
Lay your charcoal at the base of the digester. Make sure to spread the charcoal over the
base (1/2 bag) and full bag for big size.
Next put in about 2 inches of chippings or water friendly stones
Cover it up with net fiber to prevent direct contact with the coconut husk with the stones.
Fasten the net fiber to the concrete wall using nails to prevent it from pulling off.
Completely spread or lay your treated coconut husk fiber in the net fiber.
Then put a little quantity of coconut husk fiber in the centralized perforated baskets.
The perforated basket must be placed directly under the 4’’ inlet pipe.
The inlet pipe has a bend that controls the inflow of the waste water.
Place 3 table spoons of the biozyme into the basket.
Then seal the biofil digester with the slab.
Instruct your clients on how to use the biozyme monthly. ( 3 spoons is flushed into the WC
monthly)
CONSTRUCTION OF THE SOAK AWAY
Dig about 3 feet from the base of the biofil digester
Connect the outlet pipe with vent cap to the dug pit.
 Cover up the dug pit.
