can be confusing for all ages particularly to young students. This lesson will help
students understand why alcohol can be dangerous. They will know about the
effects of alcohol on the body, how to deal with peer pressure and learn strategies
for making good decisions. The following are some common effects of drinking
alcohol especially for young people.
Short- term effects of drinking alcohol
The physical condition of the individual depending on how much is taken,
alcohol can cause slurred speech, drowsiness, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach,
headaches, breathing difficulties, distorted vision and hearing, impaired judgment,
unconsciousness, anemia (loss of red blood cells), blackouts (memory lapses, where
the drinker cannot remember events that occurred while under the influence) it
may also include the following:
• Signs of intoxication- physical and mental changes that the body is
experiencing upon consuming alcohol.
• Alcohol toxicity- the amount of alcohol in the blood exceeds a certain level,
this can lead to alcohol toxicity, or poisoning. Since alcohol is a depressant, it
can slow the breathing, leading to a lack of oxygen to the brain.
• Alcohol intolerance- Some people will feel unwell immediately after drinking
alcohol. They may have an intolerance, insensitivity, or allergy to alcohol or
another ingredient in a drink.
• Hangover- Physical effect that give discomfort after drinking too much, a
person may continue to feel the effects of the alcohol on waking up the next
day. Hangover can last up to 24 hours. Doctors advise not drinking again
within 48 hours of a heavy drinking session, to allow the body to recover.
Long-term effects of drinking alcohol
Drinking too much or too often can lead to physical and mental health
problems include poor school performance, lost productivity, accidents, social
problems, family problems, and unemployment, continue alcohol use in large
amounts can cause to the development of chronic diseases such as
• High blood pressure, cardiomyopathy, irregular heart beat
• Pancreatitis- alcohol prompts pancreatic production of harmful substances,
which can lead to pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas
that impairs digestion.
• Bone deficiency- alcohol abuse can cause a calcium imbalance in the body,
which is an important nutrient to maintain healthy bones.
• Brain stroke- a non-communicable disease which affects the arteries that
carries blood to the brain resulting to brain damage due to toxin substance.
• Cancer- drinking any kind of alcohol can contribute to cancers of the mouth
and throat, larynx (voice box), esophagus, colon and rectum, liver, and breast
(in women).
• Cirrhosis- is a late stage of scarring (fibrosis) of the liver caused by many
forms of liver diseases and conditions, such as hepatitis and chronic
alcoholism.
• Fatty Liver- occurs when too much fat builds up in liver cells. Heavy drinking
makes you more likely to get it. This makes it harder for your liver to work.
