Read the following sentences carefully:

1. Keep the book on the table. 2. Sunny is standing at the door.

The word ‘on’ shows the relation between the book and the desk.
The word ‘at’ shows the relation between Sunny and the door.
These words are called Prepositions.
A Preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show its relation with
some other noun or pronoun used in the sentence.
Prepositions of Place and Direction
A preposition of place tells us where someone or something is.
A preposition of direction tells us in which direction someone or something moves.
IN: indicates something to be present in a place or enclosure.
Example:
1. The prince lives in the castle . 2. She lives in Vietnam.
AT: indicates an exact place/position.
Example:
1. I saw her at the bus stop. 2. I am standing at 13/4 George Street.

ON:  indicates a position above but touching the object.


Example:
1. Keep the bowl on the dining table .  2. We live on the fifth floor .

ABOVE: indicates a much higher position than the preposition on does. It also


indicates something out of reach.
Example:
1. The sky is above my head.

UNDER means ‘below the surface of’ something.


Example:
1. The cat is under the chair.
TO : indicates a motion in the direction of a place.
Example:
1. He went to the market. 2. We are going to England.
FROM: indicates the point of place at which a motion, journey, or action starts.
Example:
1. She came from Mexico. 2. When does the train from Patna arrive?
INTO: indicates a motion towards/going inside something.
Example:
1. Shall we go into the garden? 2. The frog jumped into the pond.
THROUGH: indicates a motion in the middle of something.
Example:
1. We drove through the tunnel. 2. They walked through the woods.
ACROSS: means going to the other side of a river or road or something straight.
Example:
1. He sailed across the Atlantic. 2. She walked across the field.
BEHIND: means at the back of someone or something.
Example:
1. He parked his car behind my car.
BETWEEN: indicates something/someone to be in the middle of two other things or
persons.
Example:
1.I sat between Mom and Dad.
AMONG: indicates something/someone to be in the middle of three or more other
things or persons.
Example:
1.Alex is sitting among the patients.

Prepositions of Time
Prepositions of time show the relationship of time between the nouns to the other parts of a
sentence.
AT: indicates an exact and specific time.
Example:
1. I get up at 7 o’clock.
Note: Exceptions – at the weekend, at night, at Christmas, at Easter, at the moment, etc.
Ex: I am going to New York at Easter.
ON: indicates a fixed date or a day.
Example:
1. I’ll visit you on Wednesday . 2. Ayush’s birthday is on 8th January. 

IN: indicates an indefinite and unspecific time of months, seasons, years, centuries, etc.
Example:
1. I am going on vacation in December. 2. Murphy was born in 2001.
Note: Some common exceptions – in the morning, in the evening, in the afternoon,
in five minutes, in six days, in two years, etc.

FROM....TO:  indicates a fixed time-span with the beginning and the end.


Example:
1. I usually work from Saturday to Thursday .
BEFORE: indicates a prior event/ period of time from a point. 
AFTER : indicates a following event/period of time from a point.
Example:
1. I want to leave before lunch. 2. I want to leave after lunch.
BY: means ‘within the extent or period of; during’ something.
Example:
1.I will complete the syllabus by Monday. 2. He will return by 3 PM.

Look at the pictures and complete the sentences using suitable prepositions.

My birthday is ______ November. She climbed ______ the flight of steps.

The house is _________ the trees. The butterflies are flying ______ the pond.
