Quarter: 3 Week: 8
Name of Student: _______________________________________________ Section: _______________
I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT:
This learning activity sheet covers the knowledge , skills and attitudes required in applying finishing
touches such as attaching buttons, marking and worked buttonholes.
II. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Learning Competency: Produce Ladies Blouse (BL)
Learning Outcomes 4: Apply Finishing Touches for Ladies Blouse (TLE_HEDM9-12BL-iIj-8)
4.1 Apply Finishing Touches
a. Identify the different kinds of button attachment.
b. Follow the correct procedures in making and marking buttonholes.
c. Perform different seam finishes and hemming.
Information Sheet:
Buttons are the most common fastener used in different types of garments. Buttons are those with
shank and with 2 or four holes. They are used as fastener or decorations.
Ways of Attaching Buttons
1. Square
2. Parallel
3. Cross
4. Arrow head
5. Common way
When attaching buttons with holes, follow the steps below:
*FLAT BUTTON with two hole
1. Secure the thread and bring the needle to the surface at the position of the
button and bring it through the button from the back.
2. Take the needle down through the other hole and through the fabric, leaving
a small gap between the button and the fabric.
3. Repeat the above to work a few stitches through the button holes. Then take
the needle around the threads between the fabric and the button to form a
shank.
4. To finish, work on the wrong side and make a couple of stitches through the
threads to secure.
*FLAT BUTTON WITH FOUR HOLES
1. Secure the thread and bring the needle to the surface at the position of the
button and bring it through the button from the back.
2. Take the needle down through the other hole and
through the fabric, leaving a small gap between the button and the fabric.
3. Repeat the above to work a few stitches through the button holes,
working through all four holes, either to form a cross or parallel bars. Then
take the needle around the threads between the fabric and the button to
form a shank.
4. To finish, work on the wrong side and make a couple of stitches through the
threads to secure.
*SHANK BUTTON
1. Secure the thread and bring the needle to the surface at the position of the
button and bring it through the hole in the shank. Take the needle down
through the fabric and back to the surface again.
2. Repeat, making several stitches through the shank and fabric.
3. Work on the wrong side and make a couple of stitches through the threads to
secure.
4. Once the threads are secure, fasten off.
Marking and Sewing Buttonholes
A hole, slit, or loop through which a button is passed and by which it is secured is called Buttonhole. It
is made on the overlap section of the garment opening in line with the button on the underlap.
Buttoholes are placed on the RIGHT side for ladies’ blouse
LEFT side for mens’ short
The orientation of the buttonholes can be vertical or horizontal.
Vertical buttonholes – used on loosely fitted garments such as pajama
Horizontal buttonholes – used on tightly fitted garments like office wear blouses.
Marking and Sewing the Buttonholes
To make buttonholes:
1. Measure the distance of buttonholes. Mark with dot using pencil. Allowance from the edge
should be 1.5cm.
2. From the dot, mark the length of the buttonhole by placing a button ( center at the dot) and
marking its diameter with a pencil. It should correspond to the size of the button. The allowance
from the edge should be at least 1.5 cm.
3. Machine stitch about .2cm around the entire buttonhole.
1st buttonhole
4th (center between 1st and 3rd)
3rd (center between the 1st and 2nd buttonhole)
5th (center between 3rd and 2nd)
2nd (about 9 to 10 cm from the button edge)
4. Fold and make a small cut in the middle with a sharp pointed pair of scissors. Open the cut and
slash to each end.
5. Sew buttonhole stitches around. Make sure the fan is situated on the edge.
Worked Buttonholes
Worked Buttonholes should be:
o Spared evenly
o Cut following the thread of the fabric
o Made correctly according to the size of the buttons
o Cut correctly and accurately
o Made strong and even
Steps in Sewing Hand-worked Buttonhole
1. Make running stitches around the entire buttonhole.
2. Fold the buttonhole and make a small cut in the middle with a sharp pointed pair of scissors. Open
the cut and slash to each end.
3. Make overcastting or diagonal stitches to prevent the cut hole from fraying.
4. Leaving the thread unknotted, take a back stitch on the wrong side near the end of the buttonhole.
5. Bring the needle out through the buttonhole to the right side.
6. Position the thread counter clockwise and hold it in place using your thumb and index finger.
Keeping the needle inside the loop, pierce the material on the wrong side to make another line of
buttonhole stitch. Repeat the process until you reach a corner.
7. Once in a corner, make about three to five diagonal stitches to make the rays of the fan.
8. Continue making buttonhole stitches on the other side. Finish end of the buttonhole by making two
bar threads across the end.
9. Fasten thread at the back.
Marking and Attaching the Buttons
Here are the steps in marking and attaching the buttons.
1. Lay buttonholes over the area where the buttons will be sewn.
2. Mark with pencil or slip a pin through the buttonhole to the exact location where the button
should be attached.
3. Position the button on the mark
4. Bring the needle through the holes in the button at least three times.
5. Finally, fasten the thread on the wrong side.
Hemming the hemline
The method of finishing the hem is determined by the material used and the width of the hemline fold.
1. If the hemline is too narrow, a bias binding or a narrow strip of fabric or lace could be sewn
to widen the hemline.
2. If the fabric is very thick, seam binding such as bias strip or a narrow lace could be sewn on
the edge of the hem and slip the hem in place.
Steps to follow when hemming:
1. Layout the garment on a flat surface.
2. Measure and fold the hem of the garment.
3. Pin and baste the hem fold.
4. Machine stitch the hem fold.
