The History of Comics

In 1066, The Bayeux Tapestry was created. This is a 70 metres long by 50 centimetres tall
piece of cloth that was embroidered to show the events of and lead up to The Battle of
Hastings. This is technically considered as the first comic strip as the definition of a comic
strip is a sequence of images or drawing that tell a story.
Going further in time in 1825 was the first real comic strip. The Glasgow Looking Glass was a
magazine that included a comic strip depicting events and stories about the political and
social life in Scotland during that time.
Now in the late 1800s The New Your Journal created the first newspaper comic strip called
“The Yellow Kid”. This was one of the first to use speech bubbles/word balloons. And this
started the trend of comic strips in newspapers and magazines.
In 1929, The first ever standalone comic book was created. The Funnies #1 was the first of a
collection of comics. This then branched off to Flash Gordon, Tarzan, Tintin and more It
mostly resembled a colour newspaper rather than the nice sleek cover designs we now
have.
Reaching into the 1938 we have the Golden Age of comics. This was the start of superhero
comics with “Action Comics #1” introducing Superman for the first time. This was created by
a company called National Allied now better known as DC Comics. Comics were often
weekly produced as the demands were high. This was when comic book sales were sky
rocketing with new heroes like Batman, Human Torch, The Avengers and loads more. This
was probably very successful as not many families had televisions and this was the
mainstream way of entertainment. During the “Golden Age” There was a lot more workers
on comic books than there is now. There were the jobs such as: Writer, penciller, inker,
letterers, colourists and editors. The popular character Spiderman didn’t appear until 1962
in Amazing Fantasy #15 as the main character
As we get closer to modern era comic books there have been advancements in computers
and technology. The first ever computer-generated comic book was “shatter” which was
published by first comics in 1985. The was a Dystopian comic about the future but the story
wasn’t what grasped people’s attention it was the incredible art. This computer generated
comics could produce comics at high speed rates.
Now the modern era of comic book are the most realistic they have ever been. With the
new invention of Adobe Photoshop and similar applications artist were able to get pristine
precision when it came to shading and depth to these pieces of art. The tone of muscles to
the shading of light and light reflection was made ten times easier with new modern
technology. Canadian studio Digital Chameleon in 2001 were the first company to use
Photoshop as a colouring option.
