COMMUNITY
ORGANIZATION
The term "community organization covers a
series of activities at the community level
aimed at bringing about desired improvement
in the social well being of individuals, groups
and neighborhoods".
It’s a democratic instrument to bring about
sustained social change. According to Murray
G. Ross, " Community organization is a
process by which a community identifies
needs and takes action, and in doing so...
develops co-operative attitudes and
practices."
Community organisation is an important
method of social work especially in the Indian
context, where the issues of the society are
focused on poverty, discrimination, human
rights, domestic violence, child marriage,
illiteracy and of late we see and experience
the abuse of authority, etc.

Should they be taught about family planning,
nutrition of children, education, hygienic living,
sanitation, forming Self Help Groups, youth groups,
etc.

Gain an understanding of the living conditions
in the community mainly through observation

of the community

Developing a Community
Profile
Collecting facts about community is an
important step for planning and developing a
programme in a community
Facts and information without analysis will not
be helpful for action
Collecting information from various sources
and presenting the same in proper manner
Interviewing people, focused discussion,
clarifying issues, etc.
Knowledge about the people and their
environment
Identification of Issues and
Planning for Intervention
The observations, interactions and
information received from various sections
may indicate various needs
Identify the stakeholders associated with the
issue
Preparing a plan for intervention through
prioritization with the community is essential
They are convinced of its importance only
when there is something visible
Plan activities in a phased manner to ensure
better results
The Process
Working with the community
Instill in the community it is not an overnight
process
Conducting meetings
Initiate, facilitate and coordinate the process
Become an instrument through which people
become active participants
Efforts should be to build upon confidence in
people's own abilities
There should not be any pushing but allow the
programme to develop at its own pace
Evaluation and
Termination
Participatory evaluation is an important
component of community work
To assess their own inputs
Impact of the programme
Effectiveness of the strategies
Assess the progress made with records made
during the process
Evaluation should always be done with
reference to possibilities for follow-up
Systematic closure or termination is very
