The Higgs boson is a particle that gives mass to other particles through the Higgs field that exists throughout the universe. Its discovery was important because without it, particles would have no mass and the universe would not exist. Theoretical physics involves mathematically modeling physical phenomena, with theoretical physicists proposing theories for experimental physicists to test through experimentation.

Pillar of Science

1. What is the Higgs boson?

The Higgs boson is a particle, and if there’s a Higgs boson, then that’s
means that there is a Higgs field. Higgs field is actually around us, spread in
the whole universe. And that field gives mass to elementary particles.
Therefore, it Higgs boson is an important discovery of the scientist.
Additional information, it was named after Peter Higgs, in 1964, after its
discovery.

2. What is the importance of the discovery of the Higgs boson?

The importance of the Higgs boson is it takes excitation to the Higgs

field and that produces boson. And we all know that this field gives every
subatomic particle its mass. Imagine if this whole universe does not have
any Higgs boson. Nothing will give energy to the Higgs field, and therefore,
there will be no mass in every elementary particle. This Earth, sun, stars,
and the whole universe will fail to exist.

3. What is theoretical physics?

Theoretical physics is a study of a particular phenomenon that requires

thinking mathematically and abstractions of physical objects. There are two
kinds of physicists, theoretical physicists, and experimental physicists. The
difference between those two is theoretical physicists are often trying and
think about the way the world could be. And experimental physicists will be
the ones to do the work whether their theories are correct or wrong. And
according to the book, Peter Higgs is a theoretical physicist and the one who
proposed the existence of the Higgs boson.
