Investigating the Lambanog Poisoning
Brief Summary of the Incident: 11 people died and hundreds more were hospitalized after
drinking lambanog during their christmas celebration. the incident should have not occurred if
the production or fermintation of the wine was properly prepared.
Investigation:
1. Identity of the Poison
- According to the Philippine Food and Drug Administration said the Lambanog tested positive for
high levels of methanol, a type of alcohol that is toxic to the body, in some cases leading to
blindness and death
2. Symptoms of the Poison
- Symptoms of methanol poisoning may be delayed, showing up even after 24 hours. Symptoms
include headache, dizziness, nausea, and lack of coordination. Depending on the amount of
alcohol ingested or the tolerance of the body, it could lead to blindness and even death.
3. Cause/s of the Death and Hospitalization of the Individuals Affected
- The cause of the death and hospitalization of the individuals affected is that they drank the high
levels of methanol which in highly toxic for humans
4. Occurrence of Poisoning
How did the poison came about/produced?
- It is methanol naturally occurring by-product during the distilling process of alcoholic beverages
and is present in low amounts, however it should be removed after fermentation.
What happened in the production process of the product?
- They did not separate the distilling process it should be separated and removed thereafter.
- And instead of producing an ethanol, the outcome product become methanol.
5. Opinion: Who is at fault in this poisoning case?
- The owner of the local distillery is the one at fault because if they distilled and produced the
Lambanog properly then there will be no such incident that happened.
