The city I come from
The city I come from is Vadodara, is the third-largest city in Gujarat. It is situated on
the banks of vishwamitri river between two important cities Ahmedabad and Surat.
The city was coined the term Vadodara due to presence of large amount of Banyan
(vad) plants. Vadodara is also locally referred as “Sanskari Nagri” (cultural city) and
“Kala Nagri” (City of Art). The city is also prominent for landmarks such as the Laxmi
vilas Palace, which was the resident of Maratha Royal Gaekwad Dynasty, that ruled
over Vadodara. It is also home to prestigious Maharaja Sayajirao University of
Baroda (M.S. University). Though 3rd largest in Gujarat, it doesn’t make it expensive.
The cost of living in Vadodara is very cheap as compared to metropolitan cities like
Mumbai or Delhi- it happens to be one of the cheapest, most affordable and
peaceful living cities in India. In Ease of Living (EOL) index, Vadodara is among the
top 10 cities for living. Also, due to less crime rate, better living conditions and ban
on alcohol products and bars, Vadodara is considered one of the safest places for
Women to live and women in Vadodara even travel solo at night at 12 am without
worrying about her safety, that itself is evidence of the safety level in Vadodara.
Also, Vadodara is famous for Sev-usal, a food item available at almost every part of
Vadodara. Also coming to architectural monuments, Kila – e – Daulatabad, the old
city of Baroda is a stop of many historic shrines, tenements, Moghul bazaars,
medieval structures, and religious places. The second-largest masonry dome in India
is located in the heart of Baroda, inside the MS University. It was built by Maharaja
Sayajirao III in 1881, and it is where the Famous Faculty of Arts building located
today. Another heritage marvel to see in Baroda is The Baroda Museum & Picture
Gallery. It has beautifully designed walls. The museum of Baroda displays European
paintings from some of the artists like George Romney and Sir Joshua Reynolds and
Dutch artist Sir Peter Lely. Some of the places to visit in Vadodara are Lakshmi Vilas
Palace, Kirti Mandir, Nazar Baug Palace, The Sursagar lake, Tambekar Wada
Townhouse, Sayaji Gardens, Ajwa Nimeta Garden, Vadodara Museum and picture
gallery, BAPS Shri Swami Narayan Mandir, Khanderao market, M.S University etc.
Most importantly, how could one forget to enjoy Navaratri, the festival of folk dance
and music, which is much awaited every year in Vadodara. As it is known the Cultural
Capital of Gujarat has the most memorable Navratri Celebrations and the talk of the
town is United Way of Baroda. It holds the biggest event of the Garba festival in
Gujarat, almost 1,00,000 people per night. Also, the Navratri celebrations come with
tasty food, dance competition, kids’ performance, dress competition and much
more. Some of the famous and great singers from Gujarat and Bollywood performs
in the Navratri celebrations in Baroda. As this is a 9 nights long event, people in
Baroda starts booking they’re passed well in advance for their choice of venue.
