ART HISTORY
Hot Art in a Cold Era:
Soviet Art during the Cold War
The Cold War was a period when the United States and former Soviet Union
were engaged in ongoing conflict, without that conflict erupting into warfare. Most
historians date the Cold War from 1947, when the United States pledged to help
those countries threatened by Soviet expansion, to 1991 when the Soviet Union
collapsed. For those living in the Soviet Union during the Cold War, life could be
challenging. They lived under a Communist regime that strictly regimented their
lives, while the threat of nuclear war hung heavy over their heads. Art was one way
that Soviets expressed their anxi-
eties and their pride. The piece
on the right is a hand-colored
photo. The artist Boris Mikhailov
has chosen discordant colors
that emphasize the discomfort of
the scene.
