"Dyscalculia is defined as a failure to achieve in mathematics commensurate with chronological age,


normal intelligence, and adequate instruction. It is marked by difficulties with visualization; visual-spatial
perception, processing and discrimination; counting; pattern recognition; sequential memory; working-
memory for numbers; retrieval of learned facts and procedures; directional confusion; quantitative
processing speed; kinesthetic sequences; and perception of time."

Learning Characteristics
Struggle to keep up during instruction
Fail to make essential connections
Chronically in need of assistance
Must relearn frequently
Limited processing capacity
Constantly must triple-check.
They have difficulty quickly making sense of directions (ex. left-
right), visual-spatial information (clocks, math), and complex
sequences
They easily become overwhelmed and unable to think clearly
