The Mole
Somewhere outskirt of Kolkata. An old house with a little courtyard surrounded by the
boundary wall… Bathroom is separated from the main building, there is a well in one corner
of the courtyard. A tube-well on another side of the courtyard. A year-old cycle leaning on a
courtyard wall.
Time - After the sunset
Little light is coming out of the perforated brick wall along with smoke, sound of utensils,
sound of Shankha, sound of a girl doing evening riwaz, sound of swing machine.
Scene 1 –
A half open door in one side of courtyard, a pale, wrinkled middle aged man is doing some
stitching work on the swing machine. Lot of sarees and other cloths are piled up here & there
around the room. The man has a thick glass spectacle on his eyes. An antique looking
pendulum clock reminds about the time by hitting its bell nine times.
A woman voice comes from some part of the house, saying “Food has been served” and the
paddling of the swing machine slows down and the sound of the machine too. The man
removes his spectacle and drinks some water and leaves the room casually. The clock is
ticking.
Scene 2 –
Clock is ticking (sound)… there is a monotonous sound from ceiling fan, the man is lying,
eyes open, looking at the ceiling, seems that it was a sleepless night for him. There are
crumbled papers all around.
The man leaves his bed and go out of the room, lights up a ‘biri’ and goes to the toilet. A lady
is sleeping on the corridor, his wife. With the sound of opening door she wakes up.
Sound of pigeon, crows, cycle bell from the road and other environment sounds.
Cut to –
That lady (His wife) is filling a bucket from the tube-well as well, while the man is coming
out of bathroom, wearing a ‘gamcha’ keeping his cloths on his shoulder and starts taking his
bath.
Cut to –
Man is dressed up for going out, he takes the cycle and goes out. His wife touches folded
hands to her forehead and says, ‘Dugga Dugga’, there is a plate & glass and a hand fan lying
on the floor, shows someone has just finished the food. Sound of clock ticking.

Location – local bus stand (There is another bus stand opposite the road for going other
direction)
The man is waiting in a local bus stand. Other fellow office goers are also standing. This man
lights up a Biri and suddenly his look stops at a lady standing in opposite side bus stand. The
lady’s face is covered by a piece of cloth to protect herself from scorching sun light and heat.
She is wearing a salwar kamiz.
The man is looking at her in such a way that he knows her or searching for her for a long
time. Though he is only able to see her eyes. He even misses his bus. A daily fellow
passenger shouts at him, ‘Bus has come, won’t you go?’. He didn’t bother to that and starts
crossing the road. By the time he reaches, he finds that the lady is gone. He returned to home,
his wife got surprised & looked at him with question on her eyes. The man only looked at his
wife and entered to his room.
Cut to -
Wife thinks something and enters to room, sees that the man is sitting on one corner of the
bed and deep into his thoughts. She steps forward and put her hands on his shoulder.
Suddenly he grabs her waist and brings her close to his body and starts kissing. They try to
make love but the man withdraws him in the middle. He is unable to do it. His body is eager
to have it but not his mind. The clock is ticking.
Scene 4 –
Location - The same bus stop. Time – Day.
Next day that man cross the road and goes to the opposite side bus stop. While crossing the
road the fellow passenger looked at him surprisingly. Tried to ask something but couldn’t as
he didn’t bother to look at him. He waits for the lady to come. Time passes by. He sits there
with a gloomy face. But no one comes. Then suddenly the same lady comes and stands on the
bus stand. He looked at her, he only can see her eyes, the whole face is covered by a piece of
cloth. She takes her bus and pushes off. But she noticed that someone is stalking her.
Scene 5 –
Location - The same bus stop. Time – Day. Next day.
The same scene repeats. But the lady now feels her concern and feels irritated. The man also
tries to stand closer. But he only looks at her.
Time-lapse –
Cut to –
He returns home. And his wife got even more surprised to see him again back home. Looks at
him with blush on her face and with confused eyes.
The man enters to his room, closed the door. His wife almost runs to go to the room, but
stopped before the closed door. She pushed the door a little bit but it’s locked from inside.

Some sounds coming out behind the closed door i:e – old trunk is being opened and
something is being taken out, scratches on paper etc. Her face turns gloomy.
Cut to –
The opposite side bus stop, same day evening time…
The lady gets down from the bus and see the man is standing and looking at her.
Scene 6 –
Time Evening. Place – the man’s house.
The man is working on swing machine. But he is restless, often he stops the machine and
thinking of something. Clock is ticking.
Suddenly a needle gets into his finger.
His wife’s voice – Food is ready…
The man leaves his stool and goes to the room and locked the door… His wife looks at him
with tears.
Scene 7 -
Time – Day. Location – Bus stop
The man standing to the bus stop of opposite direction. Lights up a biri… Clock is ticking.
The girl comes to the bus stop. Seeing her his face glows up… He tries to stand close to her.
But today the girl confronts him.
The Girl – ‘I have been watching you for last couple of days that you are stalking me, what is
your problem? Wait you’ll get your lesson today. I know well how to handle people like
you.’
The Man – Looks at her and lost in his own thought…
Even before he could utter any word, 3-4 guys come and stars beating him and abuse him.
Also, the passengers who were standing there joined them. The man’s spectacle falls and the
glass broke into pieces.
Scene 8 -
Time – evening, Location – The Man’s house.
The man is sitting on the floor, leaning on the wall and looking at something with swelled
face and scratches all over. He has a mysterious smile on his face. Clock is ticking.
Scene 9 –
Time – Day, Location – Bus stop
The man stands in his route’s bus stop. When on the lady comes to opposite side bus stop.

He looks at her and gives her a pale smile, by the time one bus comes and when the bus
leaves the stop the lady is not there.
Cut to –
The man picks up his side bag and makes a U-turn towards his home.
While the lady comes out from a shade and starts following him from a distance. The man
enters to his house.
His wife looks at him once and goes to bathroom to take a shower.
Scene 10 –
The lady enters his house with a very careful foot. She searches the rooms for the man.
Finally, she sees him from a half-opened door that the man is sitting & looking in front of
something very intensively. She almost breaks open the door.
The man is reluctant and gives no reaction… only looks at her with his eyes out, because she
is not covered her face now.
She comes forward and see a canvas and exactly her portray been sketched… The man
picked up the pencil and put a mole on a side of her lips. She stands still tears on her eyes.
His wife enters from the door.
