Fiestas have positive effects like increasing community pride and boosting local economies through tourism. However, they also cause negative impacts like noise pollution from loud music and fireworks. "Pakikisama", the value of getting along with others, positively contributes to feelings of connection but can negatively influence people to do things against their will to avoid upsetting groups. "Utang na loob", the obligation to repay favors, is acceptably part of Filipino culture for favors that are personally meaningful and difficult to quantify. It becomes unacceptable if used to demand repayment of ordinary favors with quantifiable values.

BSN 2-2 PHILIPPINE POPULAR CULTURE

1. What are the positive and negative effects in holding a fiesta celebration?

Fiestas are important events because they merge and nurture culture, history, family
relationships and camaraderie, and also introduce us to new acquaintances.

POSITIVE EFFECTS
 Increasing the sense of belonging and pride
The activities and attractions offered during the festival enhance the destination branding
and improve the image of fiestas which in turn contributes to the sense of pride among the
local community.
 Using festival as a cultural attraction in tourism
Fiestas not only creates the feeling of a unique chance to participate in this event but also
gives a chance for visitors to explore the city and gain a deeper experience of the local
culture.
 Boosting economic growth
Lastly, the tourists and visitors are spending money within the community, which
strengthens the local economy, supporting not only the hospitality industry, such as
restaurants and hotels but also businesses surrounding this festival or those that are
connected to
NEGATIVE EFFECTS
 Noise Pollution
Loudspeakers, fire crackers and loud musical instruments, appear to be one of the biggest
culprits of noise pollution during festivals in our country. With the advent of urbanization,
people in the metros had to grapple with the problem of noise pollution in everyday living, and
any kind of public celebration only aggravates this lurking issue.

 Dry Waste
Festivals also generate a humongous amount of dry waste.

2. What are the positive and negative effects of “Pakikisama”?

“Pakikisama” is a key to happiness, health, and overall feelings of connectivity to society.

Lack of these connections can lead to isolation, decreased self-esteem, and a shorter lifespan.

POSITIVE EFFECTS
 makes Filipinos realize that if they do anything to hurt a kababayan (fellow countrymen)
they are also hurting themselves and their country (bayan).
  In the workplace, this can have a positive effect with friendly, helpful employees working
together as a team.

NEGATIVE EFFECTS
 Being swayed to do things you wouldn’t normally do because you don’t want to upset the
dynamics of the group, and the fear of being rejected by your peers if you take a contrary
stance

3. When is “Utang na loob” an acceptable cultural value? Unacceptable?

The essence of utang na loob is an obligation to appropriately repay a person who has done
one a favor. The favors which elicit the Filipino's sense of utang na loob are typically those whose
value is impossible to quantify, or, if there is a quantifiable value involved, involves a deeply
personal internal dimension.
