Module for Physical Education and Health 2

Grade 11

Basic Skills for Basketball (Dribble)

Objectives:

1. Understand the importance of basic dribbling (both high and low dribbling)
2. Create a training routine that focuses on dribbling drills

Dribble

Dribble is done by bouncing the ball to the ground using the finger tips to push down the ball. In doing
so, the practice of bending the knees, flexing the body, pushing the ball just in front and using the off-hand as
an arm bar to protect the ball and prevent the opponent from stealing it without looking at the ball is commonly
taught for the starter.

Common mistake while dribbling is that players often to look down at the ball. This leads the player to be
unaware on the situation on the court; teammates’ position, shot-clock, etc.

Dribbling around the court

One of the best drill for the beginners is to dribble around the court. This will help on improving the ball
control while moving. Adding a variation of footwork by moving as fast as the player can go and slowing down
when the player is already near the corner of the court and change in direction.

Dribbling with cones

Another drill for the beginner, this one is with the use of the cones. Dribbling in between 5 cones, this
needed the ball to dribble with the hands alternately as going between the cones. On passing the last cone, try
to make a layup on the hoop, get the rebound and dribble back the ball going back to the starting line with high
speed.
