“War against Drugs”
War against Drugs became such a noise when our current President Rodrigo R. Duterte was
majority elected during 2016 presidential election, it is also known as the anti-drug policy and actions of
the Philippine government under President Duterte, who assumed office on June 30, 2016. According to
former Philippine National Police Chief Ronald dela Rosa, the policy is aimed at "the neutralization of
illegal drug personalities nationwide". Under instruction from the country's president, more than
7,000 people were killed in the brutal 'war on drugs' in the Philippines between July 2016 and January
2017 and a survey by Social Weather Stations, a Filipino polling group, in June found 82% of those
surveyed were satisfied with the anti-drug campaign.
According to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), 4,948 suspected drug users and
dealers died during police operations because of the reason that they fought back to the policemen
from July 1, 2016 to September 30, 2018. But this does not include the thousands of others killed by
unidentified gunmen.
Drug addiction is one of the most trend issues in the Philippines ever since it became rampant,
in every Presidential Miting de Avance it is always mentioned that they will make actions to make it
stop, presidential and senatorial candidates are always introducing platforms about it but nothings
happen. It seems like it has no teeth to be implemented. Drugs are most common reason why certain
areas in the Philippines has increasing crime rate, it is said that rape, robbery, and murder criminals was
under the influence of drugs while being engaged on crimes. It is also said that it’s one of the factor of
increasing poverty because people tend to spend their money on buying it rather than to spend it in
more useful way. Currently, we cannot deny the fact that there is a lot of improvement during the term
of our President Duterte, we must be thankful of it.
