Propaganda Model: Q1:What Are Five Filters of ?

The propaganda model proposes that corporate media outlets operate under five filters - ownership, advertising, sourcing from media and business elites, the threat of flak (negative responses), and an anti-communist bias - which work together to discourage media from challenging dominant power structures and promoting views that might negatively impact corporate profits or public opinion. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, social media has spread misinformation about the virus being airborne, but fact checks show it spreads through droplets; media must balance reporting facts while avoiding antagonizing powerful sources that could generate flak.

Propaganda Model

Q1 :What are  five filters of Propaganda Model?

 According to Chomsky, media operate through five filters which are;
ownership

advertising,

the media elite,

flak and

anti communism

1.OWNERSHIP

Corporate media firms share common interests with other sectors of

the economy. They therefore, have a stake in maintaining an
economic and political climate conducive to the profitability of all their arms. They are unlikely to be
critical of political policies that directly benefit them.

Example: Corporate organization who owns media never publishes the financial details, which
may endanger them.

2 ADVERTISING

Advertising is a primary source of income for modern news media. To remain profitable, media
must rely on advertising dollars for the bulk of their revenue. So, it is against the interest of the
news media to produce content that might antagonize advertisers.

Example: A corporate organization may threaten the media saying that they will withdraw
advertising contract if the media publishes any news which damage the reputation of the
organization.

3. THE MEDIA ELITE

Elite news media companies have the resources to facilitate the news-gathering process by
sending correspondents to far-off places, provide photo-ops, new conferences, press releases,
etc. Largely, these canned news pieces take advantage of the news media’s need for
continuous and cheap news content (you have to fill the 24/7 news cycles somehow). Business
leaders, politicians, and government officials are viewed as credible and unbiased sources in
this system and fact-checking or otherly costly research is therefore cast aside.
Example: The spokesperson of a prime minister or president is considered as a powerful
source of news. For making sure of a proper flow of news the organizations keeps the sources
delighted by fine-tuning the news.

4. FLAKE

Flak refers to the negative commentary to a new story or journalist that can work to police and
discipline news agencies and those working for them. Stray too far from consensus and flak will
get you. Flak includes lawsuits, complaints, petitions, and government sanctions.

Example: Most of the media never publishes news projecting negative image of religious
leaders without strong evidence. Because it may harm the reputation of media organization
among the public.

5.ANTI COMMUNISM

Q2:How would explain propaganda model considering the recent

quarantine period? explain your answers with reference to social
media?
Fact check:

There are many rumors on social media that COVID 19 is an airborne which is
incorrect.
We have to help stop this misinformation and verify the fact before sharing.

This virus that causes COVID 19 is mainly transmitted through droplets generated when
an infected person cough, sneeze or speak. These droplets are too heavy to hang in the
air, they quickly falls on floors or surfaces.

You can be infected by breathing in the virus if you are within 1 meter of a person who
has COVID 19 or by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes,
nose or moth before washing your hands.

To protect yourself keep at least 1 meter distance from others and disinfected surfaces
that are touched frequently. Regularly clean your hands and avoid touching your nose,
mouth and nose.
