Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram is an examination that uses ultrasound waves and images to diagnose cardiac pathologies. It involves a transducer placed on the chest to capture images of the heart that are displayed on a screen. Echocardiograms can be used to evaluate heart murmurs, prosthetic valves, infective endocarditis, ischemic heart disease, cardiomyopathy, and more. The procedure involves applying gel to the chest and moving the transducer across the chest for 15-30 minutes to take images. While very safe with no radiation, a transesophageal echocardiogram can cause brief sore throat and stress echocardiograms can cause temporary irregular heartbeats.

WHAT IS IT?

It is an examination or diagnostic test that is

performed with a medical device that is the

echocardiograph that uses electrodes producing

waves and images of the heart to diagnose

cardiac pathologies.

PARTS OF THE
ECHOCARDIOGRAPH

1. Transducer: device through which images of

the heart can be captured.

2. Screen: you can see the images

3. computer.

INDICATIONS

Heart murmurs when associated with symptoms.

Prosthetic valves.

Suspected or proven infective endocarditis.

Known or suspected ischaemic heart disease.

Known or suspected cardiomyopathy.

TYPES OF
ECHOCARDIOGRAM
Transthoracic echocardiogram

Transesophageal echocardiogram

Stress echocardiogram

Doppler echocardiogram

HOW IS THE ECHOCARDIOGRAM

PERFORMED?
1. A conductive gel is applied to the patient's chest or to the

transducer.

2. The transducer is placed on the left side of the patient's

chest.

3. The cardiologist will move the transducer across the

patient's chest to take images. The procedure takes 15 - 30

minutes

RISKS
Echocardiogram is considered very safe, because it

doesn't use radiation and no special preparation is

needed.

If you perform a transesophageal echocardiography,

you may feel sore throat for a few hours after the test

is completed.

During stress echocardiogram, the exercise or

medication can cause irregular heartbeats

temporarily.
