What is Environmental Impact Assessment?

It is a process in which we evaluate the impacts of our project, plan and policy on environment
and make the mitigations for that impacts. EIA of a project is usually make at early stage in
project planning. The aim of EIA is to provide the protection to environment. We can achieve
both environmental and economic effects by using EIA. The processes of EIA includes
Screening ,Scoping, assessment, review processes, implementation , monitoring and auditing.

History of EIA:

EIA has become a necessary legal requirement in Pakistan. It became necessary for all the new
projects in 1994. EIA has started in 1960 for increasing environmental awareness and
environmental protection. The legislative basis of EIA was the National Environmental Policy
Act 1969 of USA. In 1960 some of the major environmental problems were produced due to
some projects such as: industrial processes, reservoirs, stations etc.
