LESSON 1:
Caregiving Tools, Equipment, and Paraphernalia
Caregiving plays an important role in the lives of individual who need care and support.
the persons who need care and supports are:
1. Infant
2. Children
3. Elderly
4. People with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities
Caregivers must be knowledgeable in performing their roles and responsibilities. One of the most
important tasks of a caregiver is to make sure that he/she uses the right equipment, tool, or
paraphernalia that is applicable to a specific job. As a Caregiver, they should be well versed with
the different tools and equipment that they will use when they are already in the health care
profession.
A. Tools, Equipment, and Paraphernalia used in Meal Preparation
Preparing meals tools are created and designed for processing and preparing different kinds of
food based on the recipe. The following are commonly used in caregiving.
Air pot – a types of containers that holds liquid
beverages to maintain their hots and cold temperature.
Blender – an electric tool that is used in blending,
mixing, or turning solid fruits, vegetables, and other
kinds of food into liquified particles for easier
consumption.
Coffee Maker – a small electric tool that is used in
preparing brewed coffee.
Cutting / Chopping Board – durable item that is
made of wood or plastic and has different sized and
shapes. it is commonly used in chopping, cutting, and
preparing food.
Food Processor – an electric appliance that is used in
mixing and cutting food. It has interchangeable
containers and rotating blades that can shed, slice,
chop, and blend food.

Tong– A kitchen utensil with two arms that is used in
grasping solid food.
Ladle - A ladle is a long-handled spoon with a deep
bowl at the end for serving food specially broth or
soup.
Microwave Oven – that uses high frequency
electromagnetic waves and can thaw, warm, and cook
food in a short period of time.
Stove – An apparatus operated by fuel or electricity
that is used in cooking or heating food
Bread Toaster - a small electrical tool that heats and
toast pieces of sliced loaf bread.
Kettle – a kind of pot made of aluminum, stainless, or
metal, with a lid cover and a handle is commonly used
to boil water.
Oven – A close cooking equipment that used in
roasting, cooking, baking, drying, or heating food. It
uses electricity or gas.
Pots and Pans – Commonly used in cooking
containers. Pots have deeper and higher sides
compared to pans.
Skillet- A small metal cooking tools with a long
handle that is used in frying or sauce making.
Cooking Utensils – tools that are used in preparing
food that does not melt easily. These tools are
manipulated by the hands.

Cutlery – hand tools that are used in serving,
preparing, and eating.
Mixing bowl – used in mixing different food
ingredients when preparing and cooking a recipe.
Peeler- With slotted blade that is used in removing the
outer skin of fruits or vegetable.
Potato Masher- A tools that is used in preparing food
by cracking soft fruits or vegetables.
B. Tools, Equipment, and Paraphernalia for Cleaning, Washing, and Ironing
Maintaining the cleanliness of the surrounding protects all from the different disease-causing
microorganisms.
Apron – a useful garment worn to keep clothes clean
when cleaning.
Basin – Circular container with greater width than
depth.
Bottle sterilizer – used in sterilizing feeding bottle
and killing different microorganisms on such bottle
through dry heat or the boiling method.
Broom – used in sweeping dirt, dust, and other
particles scattered on the floor.
Dustpan - A dustpan is a handled pan or scoop into
which dust is swept.

Duster - A duster is a cloth or brush which is used in
removing dirt and
dust.
Cloth hamper – that is commonly used in carrying
clothes.
Dishwasher - A dishwasher is a mechanical device
for cleaning dishes, eating utensils and pots.
Clothes Hanger - A hanger resembles the shape of a
person’s shoulders and is used to hang garments on.
Flat Iron – used in removing or pressing wrinkles on
clothes or linen.
Ironing board – a foldable, flat, padded board with
supporting legs, where clothes and linen are pressed
and ironed.
Washing machine- an electrical equipment that is
designed to wash dirty clothes.
Dryer - A dryer is a machine or apparatus that
removes moisture through ventilation or heat.
Vacuum cleaner-an electric house-hold equipment
that is used in collecting or sucking up dirt and dust
usually from floor carpets and rugs.

C. Tools and Paraphernalia for Taking Vital Sign
Clinical Thermometer- a device that is used in
taking body temperature. It uses an electric display
to show the temperature of the body.
Sphygmomanometer- an instrument that is used
in measuring blood pressure. It is compress of an
inflatable elastic sleeve connected to the arm and
joined.
Stethoscope- an instrument that is used in
detecting sounds produce in the patient’s body.
D. Other Tools and Paraphernalia
Baby Bath tub- a tool that is used by infants
when bathing.
Bed Pan- a shallow toileting tool for a bed
ridden patients when urinating and
discharging feces.
Blanket- a large piece of soft woven
material that is used in covering to warm a
patient
Rubber Sheet- a clothed covered with a rubber
that is used in protecting the bed or crib from urine
discharges.
