1. From what you have learned about the characteristics and nature of qualitative research, do
you think the episode involved qualitative research? Why or why not?
For me, the episode did involve a qualitative type of research. This is because it involves
and analyzes human emotions, reason, and meaning. The researcher was the primary observer,
who was personally and closely observing the participants. This is called participation
observation, the most common ethnographic approach. They were focusing on the participants’
lives, characteristics, cultures and experiences to gather the descriptive data needed for their
paper, instead of focusing on getting numerical data, such as statistics, which is used for
quantitative research. The research process is open-minded and the data collection was
conducted on-site, in the homeland of the Tasaday Tribe — South Cotabato, Philippines. Also,
the data the researcher collected cannot be reproduced unlike quantitative data, as the data
collected consisted of descriptions and personal experiences and is therefore, difficult to be
duplicated.
2. What was the aim of this research approach?
The aim of this research approach is to gain a better and much wider understanding of
the identity and the lifestyle of the Tasaday Tribe. Through first-hand experiences and honest
reporting, this research intended to unravel the truth behind the forgotten story of the Tasaday
people and shed light on their rich traditions and cultures.
3. What research approaches were applied in this documentary?
The research approach applied in this documentary is the ethnographic approach or
simply, ethnography. Ethnography is used to study and be concerned with cultural/tribal groups,
minorities, and other types of groups and organizations. Its most common ethnographic
approach, participation observation, was also involved in the process since the researcher
engaged themself in the culture under study. The participants are from an ethnic, stone-age or
cave-using tribe called Tasaday Tribe, thus ethnography was used for the documentary.
4. Who were the other participants in this study? What was the role of Ms. Kara David in this
research study?
The other participants in this study are Mafalo Dudim (the previous guide for Manda
Elizalde in discovering the Tasaday), Dul Udelen (a pure Tasaday), Bikini Silungan (the grandson
of Dul) Lobo (son of Bilangan and Tasaday’s leader), Itet (wife of Bilangan and Tasaday’s leader).
The role of Ms. Kara David in this research study is to personally observe the participants and
immerse herself in their culture, lifestyle and traditions, in order to collect the data needed for
the research. She is to present information about the Tasaday people and unravel the truth
regarding the Tasaday hoax issue and become their voice.
5. List down the researcher’s activities that are aligned with the practices generally employed in
qualitative research.
The researcher personally went to South Cotabato, Philippines to visit the
people of the Tasaday Tribe.
The researcher closely observed the behavior and characteristics of the Tasaday
tribe, especially Dul Udelen, to get specific and essential information about the
life of Tasaday people.
The researcher conducted a one-on-one interview with Bikini Silungan and Lobo
regarding their perceptions, thoughts and feelings on certain matters related to
the tribe, such as the likelihood of living in the cave and the hoax issue.
The researcher was able to truthfully record and report the lifestyle and
traditions of the Tasaday people in the past during the interview.
