MIDAS Academy: Fig. Composite Type Fig. Steel Girder Type

Longitudinal stiffeners can be defined on steel I girders in MIDAS Civil using the Section Stiffener dialogue. This dialogue allows you to add stiffeners like flat, tee, or u-rib types. When modeling wide box sections, a grillage model using psc-mid and psc-half section types is recommended. These allow polygon and circle cell types. The element shapes for modeling are defined by the user. The Section Stiffness Scale Factor applies a scale factor to modify section stiffness, unlike the effective width which considers interaction with shear. Composite sections can be defined by bringing a girder section to the Composite tab and importing a user-defined slab section. MIDAS

Q1. How to assign stiffener plate in steel I Girder?

& how to add additional plates in mid span of the same?

A. You can define longitudinal stiffeners on steel I girder. midas Civil provides 2 section types for the steel I
girder. One is in Steel Girder type and the another is in Composite type. Both section types have the same
option for stiffeners.

Q1. How to assign stiffener plate in steel I Girder? & how to add additional plates in mid span of the same?

A. If you click Stiffener… option, Section Stiffener dialogue will be opened. Here, you can define
longitudinal stiffeners and add stiffeners on the section. It provides 3 types of stiffeners(Flat, Tee, and U-rib).

Check on ‘C’ to increase

the stiffness of a section.

Q2. When a box section is wide, generally a grillage model should be done. How do you define a section of
the box for grillage model in midas? When dividing the section, can midas know where to divide the section?
or it is up to the user's input?
A. You can use PSC-MID and PSC-HALF section types. It has two cell types(Polygon and circle). For
modelling, the model(Element shapes) is up to user’s input.

Q3. What if function for Section Stiffness Scale factor for? It is not same as effective width right?

A. It is to apply scale factor to the stiffness of the section. You may apply different stiffness for different
loading or apply the scale factor only to the moment of inertia

Q4. If a deck slab at bottom just like U trough section with deck slab composite at bottom then how to
define composite in midas?

A. You can define a girder section and bring it to 'Composite' tap. You can define U section as PSC-Value
type using Define by coordinates… option or Sectional Property Calculator function.

1.Define a section using PSC-Value.

2. Go to Composite-PSC section and

import the PSC section defined in
PSC type.

Q5. Can the software model and design castellated beam sections? Can the model wizard design voided
deck slabs?

A1. No, it can’t. It is not possible to model and design castellated beam sections using beam elements. But
you’re able to model it using plate elements.
A2. Yes. Watch another video later https://youtu.be/bJ684I23QyI

Q6. if we have asymmetric section. is midas calculating the Iyz in stresses calculation?

A. It is not possible to calculate that. Stress-yz can be calculated when you use plate elements.

MIDAS Academy 7
Q7. When we model the composite section, how we link the slab and steel girder ?, Or how we set the
composite section as solid section? and if we want to checking the shear for between the slab and the steel
girder is it possible?

A. If you use Composite section type in midas Civil, it considers the slab and the girder behaves as rigid.
You need to create rigid link if you model the slab with plate elements separately.

MIDAS Academy 8
Q8. Does the software determine the classification of the composite sections?

A. If you use Composite Design function for Eurocode, it shows classifications of the section.
