This one-day course teaches learners to select and use appropriate firefighting equipment to extinguish or control fires in the workplace. The course covers discussing fire procedures, identifying fire types and procedures, selecting safety equipment, fighting containable fires, retreating safely from fires, and reporting on fire and equipment status. Upon completing the course, learners will be able to demonstrate firefighting procedures, contain or extinguish fires, hand over fire sites safely, and file reports.

Purpose of the unit standard
Qualifying learners can select and use the appropriate firefighting equipment to extinguish or
control fires in the workplace.
Credited learners are capable of:
Discuss and explain procedures for dealing with fires in the workplace
Identify the type of fire, its context and select the appropriate firefighting procedure
Identify, select and check appropriate firefighting and safety equipment
Fight containable/extinguishable fires
Retreat from fire site and hand over to appropriate personnel
Report/record status of fire and equipment
Specific outcome 1
