B. Developmental Activity

Presentation

This afternoon we have new lesson

which is about basic techniques in sewing.
But why do we need to know the basic
techniques in sewing class? Ms. Ann: Ma’am I think we need to know
the basic techniques in sewing in order
for us to have a good product.
To have a good product? Anybody
who wants to explain further? Ms. Tuanco? Ms. Tuanco: For me Ma’am, we need to
know the techniques in sewing for us to
work smoothly because it serves as our
guide before sewing our project
Correct! Thank you Ms. Tuanco. permanently.

Our lesson for today is all about the basic

techniques in sewing.

Class, why do you need to baste first your Honeylin: For me Ma’am, it is important
project before sewing it permanently? to baste our project before starting our
Yes Honeylin? sewing project because these will guide
as in sewing especially for beginners. It is
difficult for us to make a straight line so
we need a guide and something that will
prevent the fabric from shifting while we
sew it.
Yes, you’re correct! Thank you.

Discussion

The basic techniques in sewing are:

Basting, seams and Seam/Edge Finishes
Basting – is used to temporarily hold
two pieces of fabric together.

Three types of basting:

o Hand basting
o Machine basing
o Pin basting

A. Hand Basting
- protects your materials from shifting while
you sew.
(8 x 13 cm piece of cloth - cut on lengthwise
grain, thread – contrasting color, hand
needle, pins, thimble, and a pair of scissors)

Types of Hand Basting

o Even Basting – the stitches
are of equal length about
1cm on both sides of the
materials. This can used for
areas that need more
security or control such as
armhole and neckline.

Everybody: Here Ma’am! ( touching their

armhole and neckline)
Where’s your armhole and neckline class?
Nicole: Uneven basting Ma’am.
Very good!
Next type of basting is what?

Yes you are correct.

Uneven basting – the stitch on the

upper side of the fabric is at least
twice than the underside. Used for
areas those do not need close
control such as straight side and
shoulder seams.

By the way, what is seam? Yes Mr. Cejudo? Mr. Cejudo: Seam is a line of stitching
that joins two or more pieces of
materials together to form a garment or
any sewing project.
Exactly! Or it is a line formed by sewing
together pieces of cloth.
Thank you so much but you mention Ms. Abril: Garment Ma’am is an article of
another term, garment? Anybody who knows what clothing. Or simple as cloth.
is garment?

Exactly! It’s very obvious that you really

study in advance class. Such a great practice!
The third type of Hand Basting is:

Diagonal basting – is a set of vertical

stitches on the underside about 1
inch apart, the thread then falling
into slanting stitches on the surface
of the fabric. This holds two layers of
fabric together to prevent slipping.

Any question about the basting class? Students: So far Ma’am, none.

Okay let’s proceed to the procedure in

hand basting.

1. Thread your needle using a single strand of

thread.
2. Place the pieces of fabric in the correct
position. Pin in place.
3. Secure the beginning of the stitching with a
knot or a backstitch.
4. Make several stitches with your needle
before pulling the thread through.
5. Continue in the same manner until you
reach the other end.
6. Secure the hand basting by knotting or
taking two backstitches close together.

B. MACHINE BASTING
-Basting by machine is very useful
-especially when making gathers.
-Follow the steps below.
1. Place the two pieces of fabric in
desired position. Pin in place.
2. Loosen the thread tension on the
sewing machine.
3. Set the stitch regulator at its longest.
4. Stitch along the desired seam or
hemline.
Jenny: Hem Ma’am is a border of a cloth

article doubled back and stitched down.
and gathers?

Jenicel: HemlinE is the line formed by the

lower edge of a dress, skirt or coat.
Exactly! Thank you Jenicel.
Miral: Gathers ma’am is something
And the gathers, Miral?
brought together as in the gather of our
sleeve.
Precisely! Thank you.
Am I clear class?
Students: Yes Ma’am!
C. Pin Basting

-Is usually used when a garment is going to

be sewn immediately.
-It is very helpful when finishing a hem.
-The hem is folded and pin bated before
sewing hemming stitches.
1. Place the two pieces of fabric in desired
position. In case of finishing the hem, fold
the fabric along the hemline.
2. Insert small pins through both layers of
fabric. Make sure that the pins are at right
angles to the fabric edges.
3. Place pins 2 to 3 inches apart.
4. Adjust the fabric and re-pin as desired
before stitching permanently.

Of the types of basting, which do you think

is the best, Jandog?
Jandog: in terms of time and effort
Okay, you also have a point. ma’am, I preferred to use pin basting
because it is the easiest and fastest
Any clarification about basting class? among the bastings.

So let’s proceed. Next is Seams. Students: None Ma’am.

Again what is seam class?
Faburada: Seam is a line of stitches that
Exactly! Thank you for that Ms. Faburada. joins two or more pieces of materials.

D. Seam

Types:
-plain seam --French seam
-Lapped seam --Flat-fell seam
1. Plain Seam
-the simplest and mostly widely used seam
but needs a seam finish to prevent the
edges from raveling.

Have you already seen this class?

2. French Seam
- A seam within a seam enclosing all raw
edges.
- It is strong and durable but should be
used only in straight edges.

Students: Yes Ma’am!

3. Lapped Seam
- This seam resembles a top- stitched
plain seam from the right side. It is
commonly used for joining a gathered or
pleated section to a straight edge as in a
yoke.

4. Flat-fell Seam
- Flat durable seam designed for straight
edges. Commonly used for men’s wear,
children’s clothes, work clothes and
pajamas.

Any questions about seams class?

Students: None so far Ma’am!
Okay so let’s continue to the seam/ Edge
Finishes.

What do you think is the purpose for seam

Limpag: It prevents the fabric from
finishes class?
raveling.
Correct! Thank you for that Ms. Limpag.

E. Seam Finishes

1. Pinked Finish
-seam allowances are trimmed by pinking
shears.
2. Double Finish
-done by making second row of stitching
into the seam allowances. Used in armholes,
crotch seams and waistlines.

3. Edge Stitched Finish

-this is used on curved or straight edges of
fabric that does not ravel easily.

4. Clean– Finish
-turned and edge stitched finish for
lightweight fabric.
-turn the edge of a seam allowance under
towards the wrong side of the fabric at 5cm.

5. Machine Zigzag Finish

-you need a sewing machine that has a
zigzag capability. Smaller zigzag stitches are
used on fabrics that ravel easily.
6. Bound Finish
-this is appropriate for heavy fabrics that
ravel easily. A bias strip of 3cm – wide is
wrapped on the edges of the seam.

7. Hand – Overcast Finish

-turned both seam allowances inward. Bring
the needle from the bottom to the top side.

Any questions and concerns about seams Ladion: Ma’am I just want to know if all
class? of those mentioned seams can be used
at the same time. For example for a pair
Very good question! of blouse and skirt?
Yes. It is possible that these seams can be
used at the same time depending on what clothing Ladion: Okay. Thank you Ma’am.
you are making.
Okay any clarifications? Students: None ma’am.

APPLICATION
