Introduction
According to Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most important tool you will use to
transform the world." Education is the first step toward gaining the knowledge, critical thinking,
empowerment, and expertise needed to achieve the future. The first thing that strikes in our
minds when we think about education is gaining knowledge. Education is a tool which provides
people with knowledge, skill, technique, information, enables them to know their rights and
duties toward their family, society as well as the nation. It expands vision and outlook to see the
world. It develops the capabilities to fight against injustice, violence, corruption and many other
bad elements in the society.
Education gives us knowledge of the world around us. It develops in us a perspective of
looking at life. It is the most important element in the evolution of the nation. Without education,
one will not explore new ideas. It means one will not able to develop the world because without
ideas there is no creativity and without creativity, there is no development of the nation.
Education is an important aspect that plays a huge role in the modern, industrialized world.
People need a good education to be able to survive in this competitive world. Modern society is
based on people who have high living standards and knowledge which allows them to
implement better solutions to their problems.
The education system of the Philippines has been highly influenced by the country’s
colonial history. That history has included periods of Spanish, American and Japanese rule and
occupation. The most important and lasting contributions came during America’s occupation of
the country, which began in 1898. It was during that period that English was introduced as the
primary language of instruction and a system of public education was first established—a
system modeled after the United States school system and administered by the newly
established Department of Instruction.
The United States left a lasting impression on the Philippine school system. Several
colleges and universities were founded with the goal of educating the nation’s teachers. In
1908, the University of the Philippines was chartered, representing the first comprehensive
public university in the nation’s history.
Like the United States, the Philippine nation has an extensive and highly inclusive
system of education, including higher education. In the present day, the United States
continues to influence the Philippines education system, as many of the country’s teachers and
professors have earned advanced degrees from United States universities.
Although the Philippine system of education has long served as a model for other
Southeast Asian countries, in recent years that system has deteriorated. This is especially true
in the more remote and poverty-stricken regions of the country. While Manila, the capital and
largest city in the Philippines, boasts a primary school completion rate of nearly 100 percent,
other areas of the country, including Mindanao and Eastern Visayas, have a primary school
completion rate of only 30 percent or less. Not surprisingly, students who hail from Philippine
urban areas tend to score much higher in subjects such as mathematics and science than
students in the more rural areas of the country.
The purpose of this study or research is to explain or recognize something. The
Philippines' current situation in terms of education, as well as conducting this study will greatly
help the student, parent and the school to aware and learn the effect of this to economic
development.
Discussion
There are three main types of education, namely, Formal, Informal and Non-formal.
Formal Education
Formal education or formal learning usually takes place in the premises of the school, where a
person may learn basic, academic, or trade skills. Small children often attend a nursery or
kindergarten but often formal education begins in elementary school and continues with
secondary school.
Post-secondary education (or higher education) is usually at a college or university which may
grant an academic degree. It is associated with a specific or stage and is provided under a
certain set of rules and regulations.
The formal education is given by specially qualified teachers they are supposed to be efficient in
the art of instruction. It also observes strict discipline. The student and the teacher both are
aware of the facts and engage themselves in the process of education.
Examples of Formal Education
Learning in a classroom
School grading/certification, college, and university degrees
Planned education of different subjects having a proper syllabus acquired by attending
the institution.
Characteristics of formal education
Formal education is structured hierarchically.
It is planned and deliberate.
Scheduled fees are paid regularly.
It has a chronological grading system.
It has a syllabus and subject-oriented. The syllabus has to be covered within a specific
time period.
The child is taught by the teachers
Advantages of Formal education:
An organized educational model and up to date course contents.
Students acquire knowledge from trained and professional teachers.
Structured and systematic learning process.
Intermediate and final assessments are ensured to advance students to the next
learning phase.
Institutions are managerially and physically organized.
Leads to a formally recognized certificate.
Easy access to jobs.
Disadvantages of Formal education:
Sometimes, brilliant students are bored due to the long wait for the expiry of the
academic session to promote to the next stage
Chance of bad habits’ adoption may be alarming due to the presence of both good and
bad students in the classroom
Wastage of time as some lazy students may fail to learn properly in spite of motivation
by the professional trainers.
Some unprofessional and non-standard education system may cause the wastage of
time and money of the students which leads to the disappointment from formal education
and argue them to go for non-formal education.
Costly and rigid education as compare to other forms of learning
Informal Education
Informal education may be a parent teaching a child how to prepare a meal or ride a bicycle.
People can also get an informal education by reading many books from a library or educational
websites.
Informal education is when you are not studying in a school and do not use any particular
learning method. In this type of education, conscious efforts are not involved. It is neither pre-
planned nor deliberate. It may be learned at some marketplace, hotel or at home.
Unlike formal education, informal education is not imparted by an institution such as school or
college. Informal education is not given according to any fixed timetable. There is no set
curriculum required. Informal education consists of experiences and actually living in the family
or community.
Examples of Informal Education
Teaching the child some basics such as numeric characters.
Someone learning his/her mother tongue
A spontaneous type of learning, “if a person standing in a bank learns about opening
and maintaining the account at the bank from someone.”
Characteristics of Informal Education
It is independent of boundary walls.
It has no definite syllabus.
It is not pre-planned and has no timetable.
No fees are required as we get informal education through daily experience and by
learning new things.
It is a lifelong process in a natural way.
The certificates/degrees are not involved and one has no stress for learning the new
things.
You can get from any source such as media, life experiences, friends, family etc.
Advantages of Informal Education
More naturally learning process as you can learn at anywhere and at any time from your
daily experience.
It involves activities like individual and personal research on a topic of interest for
themselves by utilizing books, libraries, social media, internet or getting assistance from
informal trainers.
Utilizes a variety of techniques.
No specific time span.
Less costly and time-efficient learning process.
No need to hire experts as most of the professionals may be willing to share their
precious knowledge with students/public through social media and the internet.
Learners can be picked up the requisite information from books, TV, radio or
conversations with their friends/family members.
Disadvantages of Informal Education
Information acquired from the internet, social media, TV, radio or conversations with
friends/family members may lead to the disinformation.
Utilized techniques may not be appropriate.
No proper schedule/time span.
Unpredictable results which simply the wastage of time.
Lack of confidence in the learner.
Absence of discipline, attitude and good habits.
Non-formal Education
Non-formal education includes adult basic education, adult literacy education or school
equivalency preparation.
In nonformal education, someone (who is not in school) can learn literacy, other basic skills or
job skills. Home education, individualized instruction (such as programmed learning), distance
learning and computer-assisted instruction are other possibilities.
Non-formal education is imparted consciously and deliberately and systematically implemented.
It should be organized for a homogeneous group. Non-formal, education should be programmed
to serve the needs of the identified group. This will necessitate flexibility in the design of the
curriculum and the scheme of evaluation.
Examples of Non-formal Education
Boy Scouts and Girls Guides develop some sports program such as swimming comes
under nonformal education.
Fitness programs.
Community-based adult education courses.
Free courses for adult education developed by some organization.
Characteristics of Non-formal Education
The nonformal education is planned and takes place apart from the school system.
The timetable and syllabus can be adjustable.
Unlike theoretical formal education, it is practical and vocational education.
Nonformal education has no age limit.
Fees or certificates may or may not be necessary.
It may be full time or part-time learning and one can earn and learn together.
It involves learning of professional skills.
Advantages of Non-formal Education
Practiced and vocational training.
Naturally growing minds that do not wait for the system to amend.
Literacy with skillfulness growth in which self-learning is appreciated.
Flexibility in age, curriculum and time.
Open-ended educational system in which both the public and private sector are involved
in the process.
No need to conduct regular exams.
Diploma, certificates, and award are not essential to be awarded.
Disadvantages of Non-formal Education
Attendance of participants is unsteady.
Sometimes, it’s just wastage of time as there is no need to conduct the exam on regular
basis and no degree/diploma is awarded at the end of the training session.
Basic reading and writing skills are crucial to learn.
No professional and trained teachers.
Students may not enjoy full confidence as the regular students enjoy.
Some institutes provide fake certification through online courses just for the sake of
earning.
Benefits Demonstrating the Importance of Education in Our Society
Creating More Employment Opportunities.
Securing a Higher Income.
Developing Problem-solving Skills.
Improving the Economy.
Providing a Prosperous and Happy Life.
Learning in the new normal is a challenge for the teachers, students and even parents. After
postponing the opening of online classes last August 24, DepEd now confirms that they are
ready for October’s opening of classes, for the school year 2020 to 2021, through blended
learning approaches after reaching more than 23 million enrollees.
Blended learning is a combination of both online and offline learning methodologies with the use
of technology. Online is when the students study with their teacher and classmates through an
application that uses a webcam while offline is when the teacher provides the students with the
lesson, seatwork or assignment that they can finish at their own pace, within the deadline. All
works are submitted and graded via online.
This new way of learning brought by COVID-19 pandemic can be an additional challenge during
this tough time. And since going back to the “normal” we’re all accustomed to isn’t going to
happen anytime soon, let’s all do the best we could to adjust and make this current situation
work. Remember, the goal of online learning is to keep the students engaged academically in
order to retain what they have learned.
There are advantages and disadvantages in distance learning.
Advantages of distance learning
1. You can pursue a job along with studies
2. You can save money
3. You save time
4. You can learn at your own pace
5. You can study whenever, wherever
Disadvantages of distance learning
1. Chances of distraction high
2. Hidden costs
3. Complicated technology
4. Quality of faculty compromised
5. Questionable credibility of degrees
6. Lose out on networking
There benefits of online learning because distance learning is gaining popularity among
students like never before, with many students satisfied with their learning experience. With
further advances in technology and more training to adapt teachers to this new mode of
learning, the disadvantages in distance learning can soon be sorted out. Notwithstanding its
many inconveniences, distance learning provides students who wish to have greater comfort
and versatility in pursuing a course many more learning choices. The key advantages of
distance education are that they allow students to use minimal financial resources to access
various learning tools. The use of video conferencing tools makes online learning even more
immersive. This increases the ability to gather information on a specific topic and to preserve it.
Distance education however limits social interaction, requires the use of complex technology,
and some employers perceive it negatively. Any student who wants to register for a diploma or
graduate degree should balance between advantages and disadvantages in order to decide if it
is the right option. Distance training will usually be the perfect option for students working.
Conclusion
For me is to understanding the students know and can do, or assessing the student
achievement, is critical to effective teaching and student learning. Teachers cannot be assured
that they are fulfilling their students' learning needs unless they know them well and are aware
of their accomplishments. Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those
who prepare for it today. Education is an important element in the struggle for human rights. It is
the means to help our children and our people rediscover their identity and thereby increase
their self-respect.
