What I Need to Know
This module provides you with activities that will help
you learn about understanding of basic biomechanical
terminology.
Activities in this module will also teach you to learn
and understand the basic biomechanical terminology.
At the end of this module, you are expected to:
1. Define basic biomechanical terminology.
What I Know
Directions: Read the following sentences. Draw a Heart
( ) if you agree with the statement and draw a Triangle ( )
if you disagree. Draw the symbol of your answer on the space
provided.
__________1. Biomechanics is the study of the structure, function and
motion of the mechanical aspects of biological systems, at any level from
whole organisms to organs, cells and cell organelles, using the methods of
mechanics.
__________2. Force is the rate of doing work.
__________3. Work is equal to force times distance.
__________4. Force is equal to mass times acceleration.
__________5. Mass is momentum time’s velocity and is reported in kilogram
meters per second.
4
How do you find the questions? Are you confused? As you
go through the module, you will understand why biomechanics is very
important and you will also understand the behaviors of athletes. You
will also learn the techniques that you can use in order to function
during trainings and games.
What’s In
Biomechanics in sport incorporates a detailed analysis of sport
movements in order to minimize the risk of injury and improve sports
performance. Sport and exercise biomechanics encompasses the area of
science concerned with the analysis of the mechanics of human
movement. It refers to the description, detailed analysis and assessment
of human movement during sport activities . To become the best
athlete that you can be, you must apply biomechanics to
maximize your ability and achieve your goals. Let us learn and
understand biomechanics as we go through the module.
BASIC BIOMECHANICS TERMINOLOGY
Force: force equals mass times acceleration and is a vector quantity, meaning
that it’s displayed in a particular direction.
5
Velocity: velocity is the rate of change of position of the athlete. It’s just like
the term speed, but with a direction associated with it. It is usually measured
in meters per second, but can also be expressed in miles per hour
or kilometers per hour.
Power: power is the rate of doing work. It is calculated either by dividing work
by time, or by multiplying force by velocity.
Work: work is equal to force times distance.
6
Momentum: momentum is mass times velocity and is reported in kilogram
meters per second.
What’s In
How does biomechanics contributes to improve physical
and athletic performance?
What’s New
Directions: analyze each quotes and answer the processing
questions.
7
Processing questions:
1. Explain the quotes presented on the picture.
