(Part - 1) “Abominable Products of the Modern World”

This is a series of article taking up one topic at a time to systematically

build up the secular support for the mission of MAKE VRINDAVAN
VILLAGES.

PART 1: Abominable Products of the Modern World

Behold the information while I describe the systematic onslaught of

culture and victimization of innocent people (especially Vaisnavas)
towards using abominable products of the modern world. This article
will fall short of describing the multitude of areas these abominable
products have crept into our life. In summary, we use these products
unknowingly for majority of our requirements and that the devotees
should not only seek out alternatives but the conclusion should be
clear: “Cities are not the best places to stay” and hence “Make
Vrindavan Villages”, because there is a better standard of life free from
these abominable atmosphere.

Prabhupäda: There will be no city. We don’t want cities.

Bhagavän: What about our city temples?
Prabhupäda: No, no. For the time it may go on. But as we make
progress there will be no necessity. City means… For the present we
have got. Because the city is there, we are there. But suppose the city
is closed. We shall be there? If the city is closed, you still will be there?
Yogesvara: But we can predict that the cities will go on for quite some
time
Prabhupäda: Yes, it will go on, but when they will see that your ideal
community is better than city life, people will take to it. Paraà dåñövä
nivartate. [From Bg. 2.59: “… Ceasing such engagements by
experiencing a higher taste, he is fixed in consciousness.”] When one
gets a better standard of life, naturally he will give up the lower
standard of life. [Conversations, Morning Walk, Rome, May 27, 1974]

Background: The background is very simple; Animals are killed in

slaughterhouses in millions everyday. The slaughterhouses are not just
producing meat for meat industry, but there exists a huge set-up to
process the by-products of the slaughterhouses called - “Rendering
Industry” vomiting out millions of raw materials for all the products
that we use from toilet soaps, toothpastes to ice creams, biscuits,
ghee, sugar, cool drinks to allopathic medicine; in other words, name it
and you are hardly going to miss out a single product bereft of these.
The main motivation for manufacturers to use these raw materials is
that it is cheap and what is considered as “waste” is converted into
“magic products”. If there is an argument that these products can also
be sourced from plants (which very few are, in reality), the answer is
the Corporate world is not so honest (Cheater and Cheated) to spend
time and money to extract from plant sources while it is very cheaply
available from Rendering Industry.

Ingredients: The ingredients are listed one by one. It is easier to do this

way since each ingredient finds use in many final products. Please be
informed that this list is partial. Note 1: “NATURAL SOURCE” Can mean
animal, vegetable or mineral source. Most often in the health food
industry, it means an animal source, especially in cosmetics (e. g.,
animal elastin, animal glands, fat, protein , oil, etc.) . Be wary of this
term. Find out exact source. Note 2: It is almost impossible to ascertain
where the raw materials for the products are coming from since the
market is filled with inter-networked suppliers, agents, middlemen,
brokers, manufacturers and retailers all with their own set of “Cheater
and Cheated” baggage.

The following ingredients, however, are confirmed of its animal origin

(mainly Bovine)
o ADRENALINE: From the adrenals of hogs, cattle and sheep. In
medicines.
o ALLANTOIN: A uric acid extract from cows. In cosmetics, especially
in almost all creams & lotions.

slaughtered animal. Used in cheese making, Shoe polish, foam rubber,
intravenous feedings, medicines and as adhesive in plywood.
o BOAR BRISTLES: Hair from wild or captive hogs. In “natural”
toothbrushes, hairbrushes, bath brushes, cosmetic brushes and
shaving
brushes.

charcoal made by roasting bones in an airtight container. Used in
aquarium
filters and in refining cane sugar. In eye shadows, polishes.

animals. Used in hair products and creams, in some bakery products
and wound
healing formulations.
o GELATIN: Gel. Protein obtained by boiling skin, tendons, ligaments
or bones with water, From cattle and hogs. Used in shampoos, face
masks,
other cosmetics. Used as a thickener for fruit gelatins and puddings
(”Jello”). In candies, marshmallows, cakes, ice cream, yogurts. On
photographic film as a coating and in vitamins as capsules. Sometimes
used
to assist in “clearing” wines.

as
food seasoning and as an antioxidant in cosmetics.
o GLYCERIDES: Monoglycerides. Diglycerides. From animal fat. In
margarines, cake mixes, confectioneries, foods, cosmetics, etc. See
Glycerin.

lubricants,
transmission and brake fluids, plastics.
o INSULIN: From the pancreas of hogs and oxen. Used by millions of
diabetics daily.
o LARD: Fat from hog abdomens. In shaving creams , soaps, cosmetics,
baked goods and other foods. Hard to digest. Alternatives: vegetable
fats or
oils.
o PALMITIC ACID: Palmitate. Fatty Acids. From fats, oils (see Fatty
Acids) mixed with stearic acid (see). Occurs in many animal fats. In
shampoos, shaving soaps, creams. Alternatives: palm oil and other
vegetable
sources.
o PEPSIN: Obtained from the stomachs or hogs. A clotting agent. In
some cheeses and vitamins.
o POLYPEPTIDES: Obtained from slaughterhouse wastes. See RNA/DNA.
o PROGESTERONE: A steroid hormone (see) used in face creams. Can
have
adverse systemic effects. Alternatives: synthetics.
o RENNET: Rennin. From calves’ stomachs. Used in cheese making,
rennet
custard (junket) and in many coagulated dairy products.
o STEARIC ACID: Tallow (see). Stearamide. Stearate. Quaternium 27.
Stearin. Fat from cows, sheep, etc. (could be dogs and cats from
shelters).
Most often refers to a fatty substance taken from the stomachs of pigs.
Can
be harsh, irritating. Used in cosmetics, soaps, lubricants, candles,
hairsprays, conditioners, deodorants, creams.
o TALLOW: Tallowate. Tallow Fatty Alcohol. Stearic Acid (see).
Rendered beef or sheep fat. May cause eczema and blackheads. In
wax paper,
crayons, margarines, paints, rubber, lubricants, candles, soaps,
shampoos,
lipsticks, shaving creams, other cosmetics. Alternatives: vegetable
tallow
(animal tallow usually used commercially), Japan tallow, paraffin,
ceresin
(see alternatives for Beeswax).

“Another symptom of Kali-yuga is the abominable practice of animal

slaughter. In this age animals are kept nicely sheltered, completely
confident that their masters will protect them, but unfortunately as
soon as the animals are fat, they are immediately sent for slaughter.
Such cruelty is condemned by Vaiñëavas like the Viñëudütas. Indeed,
hellish conditions of extreme suffering await the sinful men responsible
for such cruelty. One who betrays the confidence of a living entity who
takes shelter of him in good faith, whether that living entity be a
human being or an animal, is extremely sinful. Because such betrayals
now go unpunished by the government, all of human society is terribly
contaminated. The people of this age are therefore described as
mandäù sumanda-matayo manda-bhägyä hy upadrutäù [SB 1.1.10]. As
a consequence of such sinfulness, men are condemned (mandäù), their
intelligence is unclear (sumanda-matayaù), they are unfortunate
(manda-bhägyäù), and therefore they are always disturbed by many
problems (upadrutäù). This is their situation in this life, and after death
they are punished in hellish conditions.” [A Second Chance: The Story
of Near-Death Experience; Chapter 14-Betrayed by Leaders]
