Sports are quite popular in the Philippines.
Filipinos aspire to sports enjoyment and
sporting success, whether as athletes or as passive viewers. When a fellow Filipino
competes against the rest of the globe, the entire country cheers and prays for his or her
victory. Even in local sporting events when cities compete against one other, you can
sense the energy of each fan rooting for their local players. It simply demonstrates that
success in sports offers numerous possibilities and recognition for the athletes, as well as
displaying the heart of an athlete from that nation, which merges the hearts of people
from that nation or local city/municipality.
In a Zamboanga City there are many aspiring Athletes that have a potential to compete in the
nationals or even Olympic leagues. The competitiveness among Players here is overwhelming.
At November 21, 2018 THE Muay Thai, wrestling and swimming teams of Zamboanga City
harvested medals in recent competitions held in Laguna and Davao, respectively. The
Zamboanga delegation to the 3rd Muay Thai National Championship 2018 brought home six
gold medals. While the wrestling team harvested at the South East Asia (SEA) Senior Wrestling
Championship with one gold medal, one silver medal, and four bronze medals. The swimming
team hauled 18 gold, 20 silver and 27 bronze medals at the 2018 Grand Prix Qualifying Series
Mindanao. The players that played at the sports event is very skilled at their own game and have
a brighter future in it. The delegation of Zamboanga City to the recently-concluded six-in-one
Weightlifting Championship harvested 24 gold medals, 13 silver medals, 11 bronze medals. the
competition was held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex from July 14 to 21, 2019. But
during the recent 1st EGAT King’s Cup International Weightlifting Championship 2018 the
Zamboanga City weightlifting team only won three bronze medals held in Thailand. The 2019
Southeast Asian Games, officially known as the 30th Southeast Asian Games, or 2019 SEA
Games and commonly known as Philippines 2019, was the 30th edition of the Southeast Asian
Games, a biennial regional multi-sport event which was held in the Philippines from 30
November to 11 December 2019. Sixteen athletes from Zamboanga, led by Olympian Hidilyn
Diaz, contributed 18 medals for the country during the just concluded SEA Games; eight gold,
six silver, and four bronze. As you can see the Athletes here have the potential to compete
internationally. Contrary the recent event that just happened in 2020, the Maharlika Pilipinas
Basketball League is a regional men's semi-professional basketball league in the Philippines and
there was an event held at the Davao City called the Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan Playoffs.
Zamboanga etched its name in the history books of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League
(MPBL). Davao Occidental holds Zamboanga to record low in semifinal, Zamboanga’s final
score easily set the record for the worst output in league history, 14 points less than the previous
low of 42 of Marikina. Which is very frustrating for our Basketball players that represented the
name of Zamboanga City.In Olympic Games which is a WORLDWIDE event for sports and
considered the world's foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating
including the Philippines. Filipino athlete has never won a gold medal, making the Philippines
the country that has won the second most medals without winning gold behind Malaysia. Which
brings most of the players not only in Zamboanga City but the Whole Country very frustrated
that they can’t keep up against other countries. The way to untangle this problem is to build a
facility that can provide spaces and appropriate standard sports area or room for the athletes to
empower the Zamboangaenos local athletes training. Through this approach, more facilities will
be provided. development of the country’s most embraced sports is one of the necessities for the
nation to gain international recognition. Sports and arts, are the lifeblood and soul of a nation.
