Cultural globalization refers to the sharing of ideas, meanings, hobbies and values around the world. It has allowed for the spread of customs, language and products between countries. Cultural globalization can have both positive and negative impacts. Positively, it increases understanding between cultures and exposure to new ideas and practices. However, it can also promote cultural imperialism or homogenization as certain cultures dominate global cultural flows.

• Refers to the sharing of ideas, meanings,
hobbies and values around the world such a
way to extend and intensify social relations.
• Ex.
- K-pop from Korea
– Asia’s Got Talent
– Migration
– Sports
– Food
Cultural globalization
• Has allowed for the spread of customs,
language and products
• It has allowed people to be able to attain
goods and services which are not previously
available
• It has allowed people to become familiar with
the culture of other country allowing for
greater understanding
Impact of cultural globalization
• 1. recognition and respect for the diversity of
culture which creates the conditions for mutual
understanding, dialogue and peace.
• 2. exchange of cultural values of different
countries
• 3. understanding the uniqueness and particularity
of a country’s own culture
• 4. it enhances cultural identity
• 5. it brings increasing interconnectedness among
different populations and cultures
Impact:
• Increasing interaction between people of
different countries. Food habits, dress habits,
lifestyle and views are being internationalized
• Trade in cultural products and services such as
movies, music, publications are increasing.
Positive effects of cultural globalization
• 1. Pluralisation – interaction across boundaries
leads to the mixing of cultures in particular places
and practice
• 2. Differentiation – cultural flows occur differently
in different spheres and may originate in many
places
• 3. Contestation – integration and the spread of
ideas and images provoke reactions and
resistance
• 4. Globalization – global norms and practices are
interpreted differently.
Negative Effects of Cultural
Globalization
• Coca-colonization – multi-national corporations promote a
certain kind of consumerist commodities, promoted by
global marketing campaigns exploiting basic material
desires, create similar lifestyles.
• Cultural imperialism – Western ideals are falsely
established as universal overriding local traditions
• McDonaldization – modern institutions have inherently
rationalizing thrusts, making all human practices more
efficient, controllable, and predictable, as exmplified by thE
spread of fast food
• Americanization – US exerts homogenic influence in
promoting its values and habits through popular culture
and news media.
