One of the most current issues
in the Philippines is Cybercrime.
Cybercrime is the use of a computer
as an instrument to further illegal
ends, such as committing fraud,
trafficking in child pornography and
intellectual property, stealing
identities, or violating privacy.

Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (Republic


Act 10175) enumerates offenses or punishable
acts as follows:
a) Offenses against the confidentiality, integrity and availability of
computer data and systems: 1. Illegal Access, 2. Illegal Interception,
3. Data Interference, 4. System Interference, 5. Misuse of Devices, 6. Cyber-

b) Computer-related Offenses: 1. Computer-related Forgery, 2. Computer-related

• June 23, 2020 “DOJ identifies, tracks location of
man who threatened Frankie Pangilinan” - Sharon
Cuneta said she would do whatever it takes to find
a certain “Sonny Alcos”—the man who threatened
to rape her 19-year-old dau ghter. Frankie— who
started the #HijaAko movement on social media.
• June 22, 2020 “NBI begins probe into rape threat
vs Frankie Pangilinan” - the incident could be
deemed as light threat or unjust vexation, which is
punishable by six years and one day to 12 years
under the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

• June 15, 2020 “Philippine Journalist Maria Ressa
Found Guilty Of Violating Cyber Libel Law” - Maria
Ressa, the former CNN journalist who co-founded the
Philippines' Rappler news site, has been convicted of
cyber libel, a controversial charge that she has denied,
maintaining that it's a politically motivated effort to
silence independent journalism in the country.
• May 20, 2020 “Angel Locsin, Kim Chiu, Coco Martin receive online
death threats” - A netizen, NJ Abellanosa (@AbellanosaNj) tweeted
and threatened the lives of these celebrities by promising Duterte and
GMA supporters a reward of P200 million if they could kill the three
mentioned celebrities.
