Overview:
This "Help" file provides notes concerning the use of the BR International Frequency
Information Circular (BR IFIC) for Terrestrial Services, a service document in DVD-ROM
format.

Starting with BR IFIC [nnnn], there are two main parts to the BR IFIC (Terrestrial
Services):

• An easy-to-use menu to navigate through the DVD, and to view the contents.

• An installation procedure to optionally install the BR IFIC database and/or the

various computer programs distributed on the BR IFIC.

If your DVD-ROM reader is configured for "Autorun", simply put the BR IFIC DVD-ROM in
the reader, and installation will begin automatically.

On the other hand, if your DVD-ROM reader is not configured for "Autorun":

1. Insert the BR IFIC DVD-ROM into the reader.

2. Using Explorer, double-click on setup.bat in the main directory of the DVD-ROM.

If you have installed an image of the DVD-ROM on a network drive, you can work with it as
follows:

1. Navigate to the location of the image of the DVD-ROM.

2. Using Explorer, double-click on setup.bat in the main directory of the image of the
DVD-ROM.

Navigation:
Although navigation through the BR IFIC should be self-explanatory, a few points are
worth mentioning:

• The first screen is the main screen. You navigate from this screen to the other
parts of the BR IFIC. You can return to the first screen by clicking on the Back
command on any of the other screens.

• You can use any of ITU’s six official languages. You can choose among them on
the first screen.

• The BR IFIC (Terrestrial Services) remembers your most recent choice of

language, and will start up in the same language when you use the BR IFIC again.
However, if this is your first time, it will try to determine the appropriate language
from the settings on your PC. Failing that, it will start in English, and you can
change to another language if you wish.

• You can run the various programs (TerRaQ, TerRaNV, and/or TerRaNotices)
directly from the DVD without installation. However, these programs will execute
more slowly than if they had been installed.

Installation:
The installation process gives you the opportunity to install TerRaBase (the database for
the BR IFIC) and/or the various programs (TerRaQ, TerRaNV, and TerRaNotices)
which are distributed on the BR IFIC (Terrestrial Services).

Installation means copying the database and/or programs from the DVD to another
location, such as your local hard disk (your C drive, for example) or a network drive.
It is not necessary to install anything when using the BR IFIC (Terrestrial Services);
installation is optional. However, there are reasons why you may wish to install the
BR IFIC:

o There may be a limited number of DVDs containing the BR IFIC. Full

installation frees the BR IFIC DVD for use elsewhere.

o The programs will execute faster when installed than if they are executed
directly from the DVD.

Preparing for Installation:

Although not absolutely required, we recommend that you reboot before every BR IFIC
installation.

You should be logged on with the same Username that will be used with the data and
programs to be installed.

Unlike earlier versions of the BR IFIC, it is not necessary that this Username have
Administrator privileges.

If you are executing any programs from a previous BR IFIC, exit from all of these before
beginning installation.

You may wish to uninstall a previous BR IFIC before beginning installation of a new
BR IFIC, but that is not necessary. Please note that, starting with BR IFIC [nnnn], the
database on each BR IFIC has a different file name. Specifically, the database file is
named BRIFIC_nnnn.db3 for BR IFIC nnnn. Therefore, if you have installed the database
for an earlier BR IFIC, and you do not uninstall it, you will gradually use more and more
disk space as you accumulate BR IFIC databases with each installation.

Beginning Installation:
Begin installation by clicking on Install TerRaSys on the main screen of the BR IFIC menu.
The installation will begin, in your chosen language, with this screen:

Follow the installation steps by clicking on Next.

Installation Location:
During the installation, you have the choice of deciding where to install both TerRaBase
(the database for the BR IFIC) and the various programs (TerRaQ, TerRaNV, and
TerRaNotices):

By default:

• The database remains on the DVD.

• The BR IFIC programs are installed on your C Drive in C:\BR_SOFT\TERRRASYS.

However, you can change the default location, if you wish.

The term “Local or Network Disk” refers to any writable disk that is visible to you.

There are various reasons why you may wish to change the default locations:

• You may wish to install the database on a local or network drive so that retrieval
from the database will be faster than reading from a relatively slow DVD reader. On

the other hand, you will need more than 3 gigabytes of free disk space for each
database which is installed.

• You may wish to install the database on a network drive so that it can be shared
with many users. In this way, each user does not need a copy of the BR IFIC DVD.

• There may be various local restrictions concerning the locations where external
software and/or data can be installed. For example, some organizations permit
external software to be installed only in a sub-directory under
C:\PotentiallyDangerousSoftware, and run additional virus-checking software with
anything installed in this sub-directory.

Icons:
The installation of the BR IFIC will add three icons (for TerRaQ, TerRaNV, and
TerRaNotices) to your Start menu (under Terrestrial BR IFIC) and to your desktop to
permit easy execution of the various programs that have been installed:

Reinstallation:
There is a new BR IFIC (Terrestrial Services) every two weeks. Because each BR IFIC is
completely independent, the reinstallation of the BR IFIC, using the new version, follows
the same steps as the original installation.

It is not necessary to uninstall the previous BR IFIC before installing the new BR IFIC.

If, for some reason, you wish to reinstall an earlier version of the BR IFIC, you may do so.
However, when you have finished working with that earlier version, you must reinstall the
current version of the BR IFIC.

In some cases, it may not be necessary to reinstall an earlier BR IFIC. Starting with
BR IFIC [nnnn], you can run the TerRaQ, TerRaNV, and TerRaNotices programs directly
from the DVD, without the need for installation. Although these programs run more slowly
than if they had been installed, this may be sufficient if you wish, for example, to perform a
single, simple query on the older BR IFIC. In this case, the time required to reinstall the
older BR IFIC (and to again install the current BR IFIC) would be longer than the slower
execution time when running directly from the DVD.

After Installation, What's Next?

After installation of the BR IFIC (Terrestrial Services), the most common actions would be
the use of the database and programs which were installed:

• TerRaQ
• TerRaNV
• TerRaBase

Starting with BR IFIC [nnnn] (Terrestrial Services), the database is an SQLite database
rather than a Microsoft Access database. Specifically, the database file is named
BRIFIC_nnnn.db3 for BR IFIC nnnn.

In addition to using the programs supplied on the BR IFIC, you may wish to write your own
programs, and/or use various SQLite utilities to access the database.

For further details, see www.sqlite.org.

Can I Install only Part of the BR IFIC?:

Question: Is it possible to install only part of the BR IFIC? I do not have sufficient disk
space to install everything, and I only need the part of the database associated with my
administration and neighboring areas.

Answer: Currently, it is not possible to install only part of the BR IFIC.

One solution to this problem is to leave the database portion of the BR IFIC on the
DVD-ROM. This dramatically reduces the requirements for disk space, but it requires that
the DVD-ROM be available whenever you wish to use one of the TerRaSys programs.
