Case Study 1
Answer:
As an engineer, I believe that the Code of Conduct or Code of Ethics plays an important role for
an engineer. This is because code of ethics help provides guidance and set a common ethical standard
to encourage consistency in behaviour across all levels of employment. Moreover, this is to avoid the
abuse of power and authority that might harm and risk innocent lives. In this case, I will review the
proposals and reject if the contractor request if the requested proposal is against the Code of Conduct
for engineers.
First and foremost, I would check that the proposals set safety standards that are within the
minimum requirement. This is to avoid endangering and risking innocent lives that will be affected by
this project. If the safety standards are below the minimum requirement, I will reject this project and
report the proposal request to the appropriate authorities. This is because the Code of Ethics for
Engineers are dedicated to the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare. Besides that, I would
ensure that the proposal is within my practicing certificate and qualification as well as not containing
any illegal data. If the proposal requires outside of my qualification and my certificate, I will reject and
ignored. This is because the Code of Professional Conduct under Board of Engineers Malaysia dedicate
professional engineer with practising certificate not to falsify qualification
Other than that, I would check the money flow for the project if there is no suspicious payment
made or bribery among the professional engineers.this is because the Code of Professional Conduct
under Board of Engineers Malaysia states that professional engineers are not to accept benefit from
more than one party.
Finally,I will make sure to document all the emails transcriptions and report the activities to the
relevant parties such as the authorities, clients and safety organisations.

Answer :
Engineers are creative both as initiators and implementers of new ideas. Engineers invent new
technologies, such as the telephone or the silicon chip and they help to make other people’s ideas work,
such as structural and geotechnical engineers creating technical solutions to make an architect’s design
for a building stand up. The creative work of engineers is often hidden in the details of everyday life,
invisible precisely because it works. Car braking systems, water treatment, gas turbines and mobile
data networking, are just a few examples of continuous, creative innovation and improvement by
engineers that keep us safe, drive the economy and support our modern lifestyles.
However, there needs to be an increase in engineers’ core capacities that will enable them to
work more effectively on global issues. The world needs “global engineers.” The global engineer must
also demonstrate additional characteristics and qualifications. Global engineers have attributes such as
superior communication skills and understanding across different cultures and languages. This is to
avoid any language or culture barrier among engineers from different parts of the world.
Besides that, global engineers also need to have a well-developed sense of social responsibility
and ethics. They are usually involved in huge international projects that sometimes test their
engineering ethics. Global engineers with these attributes will avoid any abuse of power and ensure that
the services are provided with honesty, impartiality, fairness, and equity as well as be dedicated to the
protection of the public health, safety, and welfare. Furthermore, global engineers also need establish
all technical project requirements and maintain effective professional relationships with all clients
and organize all project materials. Additionally, a broader knowledge and understanding of other
disciplines such as public policy, environmental issues, social issues, business or marketing to ensure
appropriate technologies are accepted and developed.
Finally, the mentioned attributes are valuable skills that global engineers must aim to achieve in
order to produce engineering solutions that can help sustain the environment.
