History of the Singapura Cat

Though there is some controversy on exactly how the Singapura came to be, it is widely thought
that these cats originated on the streets of Singapore. In the 1970s, the Singapura was brought
into the United States by Hal and Tommy Meadow, who began developing these striking felines
into a purebred cat. In 1982, the Singapura was recognized by the Cat Fanciers' Association
(CFA) and allowed to compete in 1988.

Singapura Cat Care

Don’t let the Singapura’s tiny size fool you. These miniature felines are full of character and
love! They are mischievous, curious, and very affectionate.

The Singapura is a very social cat and loves to be involved in your daily activities, whether it be
cleaning, cooking, or spending time on the couch. These people-oriented cats are happiest when
they are with their family. They thrive on company, both human and animal—
including dogs when socialized from an early age. As a result, they do not do well when left
alone for long periods of time.

The Singapura’s tiny body is sturdy and muscular, making these little cats well-equipped for
climbing and other energetic activities. They are very playful and their curious nature means they
are apt to get into things on a daily basis. Providing scratching posts, cat trees and playgrounds,
puzzle toys, and more will help keep them entertained, enriched, and exercised.

Their shiny, sepia-toned coats are quite short, meaning grooming is a breeze. Brush them weekly
to keep their coat healthy and shiny. Be sure to check their ears for dirt, trim their nails regularly,
and brush their teeth too.

The Singapura is a highly intelligent breed and can learn new things quickly. This makes training
relatively easy. By giving them a mental challenge, such as puzzle toys or teaching them tricks,
you will keep your kitty engaged and happy.

Exciting Enrichment Ideas for Your Cat

Common Health Problems

Every cat owner should be on the lookout for common health issues that occur in any cat breed,
including obesity and ear infections. However, Singapuras also have a few breed-specific health
problems to watch for. These include:

• Pyruvate kinase deficiency

• Uterine inertia (for pregnant females)

Diet and Nutrition

To ensure a long and healthy life, be sure to feed your Singapura high-quality cat food. A raw
food diet is another option that is growing in popularity and may fit your cat's diet and nutrition
needs.

Since every cat will have its own likes, dislikes, and dietary needs, it's best to consult your
veterinarian for more information if you have questions when evaluating diet choices.
