Reaction Paper

The caregivers in the 4 situations had poor communication attitudes that hindered their ability to properly care for patients with dementia. They seemed bothered, stressed, and indifferent towards the patients. Poor communication can lead to misunderstandings and lower quality nursing care. The video demonstrated effective communication techniques for patients with dementia, such as systematic cuing using verbal, visual, and physical cues. It also showed how the hand-under-hand technique of guiding a patient's hands is more effective for teaching tasks than solely verbal instruction. Good communication requires the coordinated use of verbal, visual, and physical elements.

In the 4 situations, identify the communication attitude the caregiver has done that could

hinder communication and eventually affect nursing care, and identify the techniques used
that promote communication.

The caregivers common attitude in the 4 situations were not good because their approach
towards their patients are indifferent. They seem to be bothered by how the patients with
dementia acts and so they didn’t treat them right. They were seemed stress and it let them affect
their job which is to give genuine care to veterans who have dementia. They were aware of how
a person with dementia acts and their needs. Patients with dementia need patience and assistance
in doing their daily activities in life in order for them to live comfortably regarding their illness.
Prejudice and indifference hinder a good communication which leads to confusion and more
trouble. Bad communication can hinder a quality nursing care towards patients because there will
be misunderstanding. The caregivers haven’t been successful in taking care of the patients
because they didn’t deliver a well communication attitude. Communication is always used and
needed in taking care of patients for example in asking for consent before doing a certain
procedure or educating patients. It is also important in building rapport with the patient so they
will trust and cooperate with you.

The video also showed the appropriate way of dealing the patients with dementia. It was
highlighted in the video all the effective communication techniques that were effective in
soliciting cooperation from these patients. It was shown in the video that systematic cuing does a
good difference which involves step by step cuing like visual, verbal, or touch but it will depend
on what a patients’ need. It always begins with verbal cues as nurses greet their patients and ask
about how their day is. Then comes the visual cue which is easier to process for the patients as it
involves physical objects which they can see and feel more easily. In teaching a patient on how
to take care of themselves, hand–under-hand technique is more effective where first the nurse’s
hand guide the patients’ hand in doing a thing until the nurse lets go of her hand giving full
control to the patient so they will get used to it and can practice independency as possible. Good
communication needs verbal, visual, and physical to correlate with each other in order to deliver
a good quality communication as well as quality nursing care.
