Activity 5
PH OF SUBSTANCES
INTRODUCTION
The pH scale relates the hydronium ion concentration to a number, the pH, that
serves as a useful indicator of the degree of acidity or basicity of a solution. The pH scale
specifies how acidic or how basic a solution is. The pH scale has values that range from
0 (very acidic) to 14 (very basic). A pH of 7 is neutral, neither acidic nor basic.
Solution pH plays major roles in agriculture, physiology, industry, municipal services, acid
rain and the list could continue.
OBJECTIVES
This activity should enable you to:
1. Measure the pH of substances using the pH meter correctly.
MATERIALS
List the materials used in the video.
PROCEDURE
Based on the video, reconstruct the step-by-step process.
DATA AND RESULTS
Construct a table of the results following the format below:
Observation
Sample pH Red Litmus Blue Litmus Bromothymol Classification
Phenolphthalein
Paper Paper Blue Test
***Note: Add as many rows as necessary
1. What is an indicator?
2. What indicators were used in the experiment?
3. What is Bromothymol Blue Test? Explain the color changes in this test.
4. What is phenolphthalein? Explain the color changes in this test.
